CuRioSiTy is a new music night taking place at the 300 capacity
Mr Kyps live music venue (click link to view website) located in Poole, near Bournemouth, Dorset.
It's been a long time coming but Mr Kyps as a venue has too much going for it to not have a regular happening for new bands. As time moves forward the possibility for true originality in music seemingly diminishes, but possibility is, by its very definition, capable of happening! CuRioSiTy aims to showcase the bands who are pushing the boundaries and reaching out to people in an original way.
If you're into live music and you want to be inspired by quality bands with energy, originality and soul, in surroundings meticulously crafted for that purpose, it's our aim to satisfy your curiosity!
The first CuRioSiTy night was on Friday 13th October 2006, John Peel Day. Please visit the Reviews blog above for reviews of the night. Here's an excerpt:
"John Peel Day was celebrated in appropriate style at Mr Kyps on Friday 13th October. Three very unique acts won over the crowd and the fact that the Noisettes unfortunately had to pull out due to injury was soon pushed to the back of your mind. Mr Kyps has a wonderful sound system, good sized stage, great lighting, professional, friendly staff and it is the perfect venue to see a live band. Make the most of this venue!"
Since that date we have held many successful nights, the first featuring headliners The Clams who have since made it onto the Rock Sound Hot 100 ‘Bands to keep an eye on in 2007’ List and are currently recording their debut album in the US. The second gig was the first stop for the NOISEttes on their UK tour following 2 months on the road with Muse. As reported on the band’s myspace blog, “Mr Kyps in Poole was totally sold out, frenzied moshing, crowd surfing, lovely people - Amazing showâ€.In February we hosted Mohair as one of only 3 UK warm-up dates preceding their US tour with Razorlight. We also had a fantastic band on 'constant tour' at the mo, who were invited to SXSW, and surely destined for big things, SixNationState. The March night featured Bournemouth monumental post rock band Pirate Ship Quintet, who have a BSO (one of the country's most respected orchestras) cellist among their members! April featured an astonishing display of genre mashing by Acoustic Ladyland, and May saw CuRioSiTy go acoustic for one very special night with Mohair returning to do a rare acoustic set in-the-round. June saw a break from CuRioSiTy in the venue as we at Mr Kyps hosted the main stage at Bournemouth Live music festival on Saturday 30th, featuring 8 diverse original acts and headlined by the Noisettes. In July we witnessed the punked up rock'n'roll dynamics of Vincent Vincent and the Villains, and August brought us one of the BBC's Ten Bands to Watch in 2007 - The Rumble Strips. Dead!Dead!Dead! paid us a visit in September, and we were delighted to welcome back Acoustic Ladyland to play John Peel Day in October, having forgotten quite how brilliant they actually are! Pete and the Pirates headlined in November, the same month they featured on the front page of Artrocker magazine and toured with the Young Knives, then we had a beautiful in-the-round special headlined by the magnificent SixNationState, one of THE bands of 2007, watch out for them in 2008!
...and those are just the headline acts...we have three bands on each bill and all are carefully selected and worthy of your attention.
2008 sees a bit of a shake up to the CuRioSiTy series. This year at Mr Kyps we have decided that our CuRioSiTy and much-celebrated Acoustic Sessions (which have been building for over 4 years now) should join forces, as both nights are striving to bring you the very finest and most inspiring artists in their field each month. While CuRioSiTy Live! will bring you the best amped-up and in-your-face acts, CuRioSiTy Acoustic will be showcasing more chilled out and subtly textured bands in the comfort of our in-the-round set-up, with all the added atmosphere and vibe that comes with it.
See the 'Reviews' blog above to read various people's opinions about all the CuRioSiTy gigs that have taken place.
