Space Bar is from Helsinki, Finland. We play some kind of mixture of American powerpop, traditional Brit-rock and Scandinavian Melancholy-pop. Some call our music also Attitude-pop, Sci-fi-rock or Space-pop. Everyone could be right but till these days Space Bar (and Dean) have been too mainstream for indie-labels and too indie for major-labels. Thought there has been lot of interest towards our music we are still unsigned.
Space Bar's first rehearsals was in December 1998, first we played mostly cover songs (Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Roses, Duran Duran, Simon and Garfunkel etc.). First real own song was "Mouth" in summer 1999. First demo, including 3 songs, was made in May 2000. Fall 2000 we made our first gig in "Jyrki hit challenge"- competition. And surprise, surprise: Third place (500 bands had sent demos). Because we had only three songs ready we couldn't exploit the sudden success. Band line-up changed once in awhile. After competition we found excellent vocalist Jussi Saxlin (our third one). We made 10 song demo Radio Silence, its downloadable in our website. Jussi Saxlin left band in January 2002. Jussi continued his career first in Eurovision, then in Idols and then he joined in Irina's band as bassist (Irina is Finnish Top10 artist, selling platinum etc.)
We found female vocalist and changed name to Dean. Dean-era lasted 2002-2005. Dean made 3 demos and one single (authors edition). Dean also suffered of line-up changes. We have already lost count of changes. Dean met its end with female vocalist in autumn 2005. We decided to change name back to Space Bar and search male vocalist. After long searching Jussi Saxlin shows his interest to join band again. So Jussi came back, he also continues with Irina. Few other previous members also joined the band and Kristian who came in band 2002 as a guitarist and played drums in 2004-2005 change his instrument again, this time he became bassist. Arto Ojala who played drums in Dean 2002-2004 rejoined and ex-bass player Tapsa Louhimo (Dean 2002-2005) rejoined as keyboardist. That might sound complicated but now we have best of the best players who knows the songs and get tunes alive and kicking.
Current line-up get-together was in March 2006. Pasi Heikkinen, the guitarist and songwriter, is the only original member and primus motor of Space Bar.
