About Me

A faint, chill wind blows across the blasted earth; raising tiny tornadoes of dust that soon fade into nothingness. Aside from the breeze and I, there is no motion, no activity, and no sign of life. My boots make a soft crunching sound as I carefully pick my way through the debris. Overhead, the dim sun tries to penetrate the dense cover but fails miserably, casting an eerie orange tint that barely lights the day. I’m wondering, for the millionth time, why is has come to this. Why did we do this to ourselves? Why can’t it be like before?
As I cross the dry stream bed, I cease my reverie and pay sharp attention to my surroundings, my ears straining to pick up the dim sounds that should indicate I’ve reached my destination. I cautiously work my way up the hill, past the dead skeletons of broken trees that had thrived here when water still flowed. Reaching the ridge, I pause for a moment to survey the scene below, my eyes quickly scanning back and forth searching for the one thing I seek.
Aha, there it is! Amidst the ruins of the city I can see the thin trails left by countless boots. Trails coming from all points of the compass, but converging in one place. I pick up speed as I near the heavy metal door set deep into the concrete bunker. As my outstretched hand grabs the cold steel handle, I can feel a deep throbbing coming from within the enclosure. My ears can detect a faint sound that stirs my heart with its haunting familiarity. Twisting the handle, I lift the heavy door and climb down into the thick darkness.
The corridor makes a quick turn to the right and continues for a long way at a steep downward slant. The sound keeps getting louder, more rhythmic and compelling, as I descend deeper into the compound. The dirty yellow light bulbs, which barely lit the passage, are becoming more frequent. I finally come to the end, my way blocked by a thick wooden door with a small peephole in the center. I knock on the door in the old way, using a pattern that is long forgotten in what passes for civilization these days. The peephole dims as an eye peers out at me. A crack of light forms as the door slowly pivots towards me on its rusty hinges.
It hits me now. It flows over be like a bath of pure golden sunlight. I bask in the glory, gazing in rapt awe at the others in the room, moving about in a way I have not seen for many years. I’ve arrived. I’m finally home.
I work my way through the crowd so I can better see. There they are, with guitar and keyboard, with drum and bass. There they are, making the incredible sounds that had seemed like a dim memory. And here I am, finally after all these lonely years and many miles of travel, finally listening again to my beloved MUSIC!
What can I say... I'm a regular guy who loves music. I've found that MySpace is a really great way to keep up with the latest info. I'm also on JamBase, Jam Society, Phantasy Tour, Setbreak and MoBoogie - just look up Unkl Russ (or UnklRuss).
When Jerry passed in '95, I kind of lost my enthusiasm for the music scene. I settled down into suburban home life, focusing on my family. I'm married with three great kids. But within the past couple years or so I've been listening to the Sirius satellite channel Jam-On and I've re-discovered the huge variety of intensely invigorating music that's out there now. The stuff you never hear on commercial radio. I've been going to a lot more shows, downloading & buying a lot more music, and generally having a great time. Todays music scene is very vibrant and eclectic - there's just so much good stuff out there!!
