Merched Becca

Welsh Language Rockers

About Me

August 31st 1985 saw a very young band from Gorseinon take the stage at Clwb Ifor Bach in the Welsh Capital for their very first concert. Brothers Richard and Robert Vaughan formed the band, Merched Becca. They took their name from their local heroes of 1839. who shook the establishment by turning against wealthy absent landowners who constantly sought ways of taxing the common folk. During the early eighties in Swansea to be a Welsh language Rock band was a mini-revolution in itself.Over the following decade Merched Becca gigged as often as they could and recorded several sessions for Radio Cymru and Swansea Sound. Winners of the battle of the bands in Porthmadog Eisteddfod in 1987 and controversially the band that stopped the Coral contest final that was taking place on the main stage of Newports Eisteddfod in 1988 in its tracks. It took the Eisteddfod officials to literally pull the plug on the band to get them to turn their music down. The youth music tent on the Maes has since been moved outside of the main grounds to its alternative site Maes B.The band went through various line-ups over the following years but during the 90s the brothers Vaughan were joined on stage with the inspirationally melodic lead riffs of Jeremy Young (lead guitar) and the powerhouse on drums of Nick Samuel (Crys).Merched Becca in the 20's will feature Vaughan brothers Rich (Guitar) and Rob (Bass), Nick (Drums) and Jeremy (Lead Guitar), who are joined with the voice of Cath Ayers, Phyl Harries (Sax and Flute) and Chris Josey (Keyboards)Musically the band has come a long way over the past 20 years but still a guitar based sound that combines simple melodic songs such as Diwrnod Braf o Haf and Ond Rwyn Cofio (these both can be heard on www.merchedbecca.com ) to a rock and roll temperament of Rwyn dy garu (I love you) and still with the heavier side as heard in Fem dewiswyd (chosen One), Rebecca or Mwg Drwg!! (Naughty Smoke!!).................................................... ............................................................ ............................................................ .....................................................Ar yr 31ain o Awst 1985, daeth band ifanc iawn o Gorseinon a throedio llwyfan Clwb Ifor Bach ar gyfer eu gig cyntaf erioed.Ffurfiwyd y band , Merched Becca, gan y brodyr Richard a Robert Vaughan gan gymryd yr enw oddi wrth eu harwyr lleol o 1839. Yn yr wythdegau cynnar yn Abertawe roedd bod yn fand roc yn chwyldro bychan ynddoi hun.Yn ystod y ddegawd nesaf, perfformiodd Merched Becca gymaint a phosib a recordiwyd sawl sesiwn i Radio Cymru a Swansea Sound. Yn enillwyr brwydr y bandiau yn Eisteddfod Porthmadog yn 1987, ac yn ol pob son y band a stopiodd ffeinal y gystadleuaeth gorawl oedd yn cymryd lle ar brif lwyfan Eisteddfod Casnewydd yn 1988, roedd rhaid i swyddogion yr eisteddfod yn llythrennol dynnur plwg ar y band er mwyn eu cal nhw I droir swn I lawr. Ers hynny maer babell ieuenctid ar y maes wedi cael ei symud i r enwog Maes B.Cafwyd nifer o wahanol aelodau yn y band dros y blynyddoedd ond yn ystod y nawdegau cafodd y brodyr Vaughan gwmni Jeremy Young ai riffs melodaidd ysbrydoledig (Prif Gitar) ar nerthol Nick Samuel ar y drymiau (Crys).Bydd Merched Becca y dyfodol yn cynnwys y brodyr Vaughan, Rich (Gitar) a Rob (Bas) yn perfformio gyda Nick ( Drymiau) a Jeremy (Prif Gitar) ac yn ymuno , bydd llais hyfryd Cath Ayers, Phyl Harries (Sacs a Ffliwt) a Chris Josey (Allweddellau) .Yn gerddorol, maer band wedi datblygun enfawr dros yr ugain mlynedd diwethaf ond yn sylfaenol maer gerddoriaeth yn amrywio I fod yn gyfuniad o swn gitar a chaneuon syml melodaidd fel Diwrnod Braf o Haf a Ond Rwyn Cofio (gellir gwrando ar y ddwy gan yma yn rhan caneuon ar www.merchedbecca.com ) i dempo roc a rol Rwyn dy garu ac yn dal I fod ag ochor drymach fel a glywir yn Fem dewiswyd, Rebecca neu Mwg Drwg.
