HWYL!

About Me

Hwyl is a Welsh word that means many things including "wind in your sails" or "sudden spark of enthusiasm." This certainly describes this Gypsy Celtic Rock band based out of North Carolina but with strong roots in Wales. The music is melodic with dramatic rhythm patterns, strong in originality and spunk, symbolic of flying red dragons and wild mystic oceans of lost mermaids and ancient valleys of green. There are love songs, anti-war songs, waltzes and jigs. Bob Marley must have visited Wales because there is a definate reggae influence. There are several songs in the Welsh language including rock versions of "Calon Lan" and "Sospan Fach." , Since the birth of Hwyl in May 2005 they have staged Koko Booth Ampi Theater in Cary, NC for the Gaelic Festival 2005, the International Festival of Raleigh, 2006 and many street fetivals in the area. They perform regularly at Irish pubs and restaurants who support culture and often appear live on WXDU, WCOM and have regular air play at radio IRFT (www.radioirft.com). The Herald Sun's quote on Hwyl was "Hwyl brings new culture to North Carolina" after Carrboro Fest 2005. Hwyl still awaits the big ship of pirated enthusiasm to steal them aboard a new apocolpse of splendour...........May the 'hwyl' be with you.............and don't let anyone take it away from you...............HWYL!! Like living in Carrboro and walking into a local bar and having the bar man scold you for saying the word 'hwyl',,, because he thinks you are shouting your band's name and you're not! You are meeting fellow men who know what the hwyl is all about, my dear friends, what its all about. You either have hwyl or you don't....Now, some days our hwyl is low but its never gone..........and don't let anyone take your hwyl away......may the hwyl be with you!!!!***************************************************** ********Rhiannon Jones (Vocals, Guitar, Fiddle} from Ystradgynlais, South Wales. Her song "Ystradgynlais” went on a sound track for a BBC documentary about mining towns in 2003. She came to the U.S to join Dragonship, a rock opera based on Thomas the Rhymer, an old Celtic Bard. Dragonship sailed away to another shore leaving her to set the sail for the "Hwyl" ship to embark upon its journey into deep sea." ************************************************************ *******Michael St. John ( (Full Drum Kit) from Chapel Hill, NC blows air into the sail with his dynamic drumming and back up vocals. His 'hwyl' radiates like a cave man coming out of the caves for the first time and seeing the sun when he shouts 'HWYL!" He's been a drummer since those days of old and a bard indeed in song and spirit. His heritage is Welsh/Scottish. ************************************************************ *******Greg Bernucca ( Bass Guitar) of Welsh heritage already had the dragon flag flying high before he found his 'hwyl' or maybe the 'hwyl' found him in his exceptional bass playing with intricate rhythm patterns and warm stage presence. He's originally from New York but resides in N.CC.D Releases: Ship Of Fools 2007, Caitlyn’s Celts 2008 ************************************************************ ********* ************************************************************ *********
