On October 3, 1960, a sitcom appeared on the old black and white TV sets that celebrated family, friendship, community and the Golden Rule. That show was “The Andy Griffith Show.” In its eight years on the air, from 1960 to 1968, it never dropped below seventh place in the seasonal Nielsen rankings, and it was number one the year it ceased production. It isn’t surprising to fans of the show to know that after 46 years, that show has never been off the air as it moved into syndication and reruns that are still popular today.
“The Andy Griffith Show” pilot originally aired as an episode of "Make Room For Daddy," a popular sitcom starring Danny Thomas. Sheldon Leonard produced both shows for Danny Thomas Productions.
The show starred Andy Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, Don Knotts as Deputy Berney Fife, Francis Bauvier as Aunt Bee, and Ronnie Howard as Opie Taylor. Other regulars included Betty Lynn as Thelma Lou, Howard McNear as Floyd Lawson, Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle, Elinor Donahue as Ellie Walker, Aneta Corsaut as Helen Crump, George Lindsey as Goober Pyle, Hope Summers as Clara Edwards, Hal Smith as Otis Campbell, Jack Dodson as Howard Sprague, Paul Hartman as Emmett Clark, Howard Morris as Ernest T. Bass, Denver Pyle as Briscoe Darling, The Dillards as the Darlings, Jean Carson as "Fun Girl" Daphne, James Best as Jim Lindsey, Parley Baer as Mayor Stoner, Jack Burns as Warren Ferguson and Alberta Nelson as Flora Malherbe.
