THAT BEING SAID....Joseph King began his musical career while a Religious Studies major at Stanford University. Upon graduating in 1998 he moved into an overcrowded artist abode in San Francisco, where he immersed himself in beat poetry and psychedelic rock, dabbled in the budding Bay Area rave scene, and spent countless nights chasing ghosts through the dive bars of North Beach and Haight Ashbury. He toured the West Coast and Southwest in a used R.V. for a year before migrating South in March of 1999, where he spent 6 years as the songwriter, frontman and founder of Austin-based cult favorites Canvas. After 3 albums, over 500 shows, and near-perfection of the indie-bohemian lifestyle with Canvas, Joseph began to feel a need for artistic and spiritual reinvention. In October of 2005, he relocated to New York City where he is now living, writing, and breathing life into a new musical entity. Best described as down-tempo rock/pop with dub and trip-hop undercurrents, Joseph's sound is derived from a myriad of influences ranging from Manu Chao to Morphine, Portishead to Paul Simon, Quentin Tarantino soundtracks to Brooklyn-based electronica producers. Accompanied only by a laptop, guitar, and long-time muse Katrina, Joseph has spent a year in New York cultivating the new sound and body of work that will soon give way to his first solo release. In the Spring of 2006, Joseph joined with drummer Alex Wong and bassist Sanjay Jain to form one of the most engaging new live acts in the City. Originally from Palo Alto by way of Los Angeles, Alex is a multi-talented musician, producer, and capoeirista living in Brooklyn. After seeing Alex play a show at favorite Lower East Side hang out Rockwood Music Hall, Joseph tracked Alex down via myspace and convinced him to collaborate. Sanjay is a bassist and pianist who spent his childhood in Japan before moving to New York by way of Boston. He spent many years as the bass player for Brit-pop group Passenger, and a brief time with Alpha Rev before being introduced to Joseph by a mutual friend. The trio played its first show together in late March, 2006, and began to develop a very excited fanbase in the City in a very short time. In early 2007, the boys were joined by Mo Bhansali on guitar, and the group promptly its named to Deadbeat Darling. A New York native and love-junky, Mo has added a rich, vibrant musical layer to the already lush sound. And finally, the band has added the ever-talented Omar Akil on trumpet and keys, and it seems as though the deadbeat family is finally complete...
Joseph and company are recently released its debut Ep "Belle Epoch" in October of 2007. Plans to begin recording a follow-up are currently in the works, and will no doubt be underway sometime this Spring...love and energy.
