About Me

G.E. PERRY, who’s grandfather, Gordon, originated in Ontario, Canada began his musical journey along with brother Mike at the young age of 7 when the boys lost their mother to kidney disease. The elder Mr. Perry, who was forced to work double shifts at the mill to pay bills, employed a young black woman, (Nancy Bridges) as housekeeper and caretaker. Miss Nancy, who was found of the blues and r&b, was allowed the use of the family stereo to play her records while she worked. Often she would sing along with her fantastic voice, one that most producers dream of. She was terrified of thunder and during violent thunderstorms would huddle beneath the bed with the boys and sing spirituals. Unbeknownst to them the boys were getting a first class education in the blues. The elder Mr. Perry would have Sunday jams with musicians from his youth, and during one such jam, Jim Barbee, who played banjo, brought an electric guitar and during a break offered young G.E. a chance to tinker with it. The rest as they say is history. The boys took the usual path of most garage bands, performing the white pop hits of the day until nature and the blues took it’s rightful place in the evolution of G.E. PERRY & STRANGE BREW.------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------- Gordon Perry is an accomplished singer, songwriter, performer, studio- engineer, multi-instrumentalist, and baseball fanatic. I hit over .500 in 2005 in adult senior league fast pitch baseball. I am married to a great woman named Kim, 2 kids who also play ball, sometimes against me, who don’t like being struck out by the old man, which doesn’t happen very often. I also service what I play. My business is called; G. PERRY GUITAR AND ELECTRONIC REPAIR. I specialize in tube amp repair and restoration. Also, guitar set-up, refretting,pick-up installation, minor cosmetic repair. Currently performing blues and cuts from my CD "The Boy Your Mama Warned You About",with my band STRANGE BREW.My current scheduel can be seen here. Currently working on my new CD "On The Line."G.E. PERRYS’ GEAR; ACOUSTIC GUITARS /MAIN;1977 MARTIN SIGMA 12 STRING;strung up as a six string and detuned a whole tone.I then capo up a whole tone. The purpose is to put a little slack in the strings and to get farther up on the fat of the neck.Strung with D’addario 12’s .I wanted a guitar with a wide neck like a 12 but couldn’t find one to my liking. This guitar also has been fitted with a strat pick up clipped under the E and A strings and sent to a boss octave pedal then a volume pedal.I use this for bass sounds and sometimes run it through a Peavey Mega Bass head and a 15 cab. I use a Martin Thinline under saddle pick up which is sent to a Trace Elliot pre amp. This goes to an Ibanez PT-5 (chorus, delay, overdrive,eq,compressor)then to a Guyatone vibrato. From there it hits a Line Six Looper. Then it goes to an AB box. Send 1 hits the PA. Send 2 hits my Fender Super Twin Reverb. I do this so that I can incorporate the same pedals into my electric set up. Obviously when I use acoustic my send goes to PA.Electric goes to the Fender.I also use a Washburn C 64 CE classical for solo and jazz sets. I set it up with D’addario Pro hard tension classical strings. Also I have this great old Harmony archtop with brass wounds that just oozes Mississippi delta blues. It is without a doubt the best sounding slide guitar I have ever heard! My electrics include; a 2001 Gibson Les Paul Studio Plus w/burst buckers, a 1985 Roland GR 600 STRAT STYLE controller and GR 700 SYNTH. I refretted it with Fender medium jumbos. The bridge pick up was replaced with a Texas Special. Also I have a 1977 Hondo Professional 2 strat copy that I refretted with jumbos. All of my strat style axes have a trick out switch that allows me to use all 3 or neck and bridge pick up combinations. Amps;1977 Fender Super Twin Reverb w/utah 12’s (stock), Late 80’s Crate T-60 w/12 inch speaker, 1969 Vox Super Beatle model 1141, 1985 Marshall JCM 800 that was pulled from a burning music store and left for dead. I cleaned it up and wow. It’s a miracle. The amp was on the way to the dump when I pulled it from my friends pick up truck! Picks;for flat picks I don’t have much of a preferrence since I use my fingers most of the time. When I use them I’m not picky as long as they’re not so thin they break. I use only Dunlop metal finger picks and the Dunlop brass slide no. 555. I have too much slack in my set ups for glass. The Band Strange Brew is: On Harmonica-my longtime partner and best friend James"Jimmy the harp" Gay;On Bass- a good friend and well seasoned player of all styles, James Mills; On Drums-the newest member and easily the best percussionist I’ve worked with in a long time,Paul Cooper.
