Gene Stovall AKA GENo JIVE
My mother, Mary Mease Warren, has designed costumes for over one hundred professional productions throughout the United States, enjoying a career that began at the Negro Ensemble Company, in New York City, while still a student. Her work has appeared on and off of Broadway, in regional theatres, and nationally televised productions. Locally, she has designed for the Pittsburgh Playhouse, the Alleghenty County Bar Association, The Red Barn Theatre, and the Pittsburgh Public Theater.
A Native Pittsburgher, Mary was proud to have done costumes for the late August Wilson, which included Fences, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in Pittsburgh at the Pittsburgh Public Theater, now known as the O'Reilly Theater.
With degrees in both Costume and Set Design from Carnegie Mellon University, Mary spent fifteen years of her talents and skills with young adults and children as an educator. Her teaching philosophy was methodical in her approach and uncommon compared to traditional educators.
Mary believed and spoke out loud often to her classes, “I can not teach you anything, but if I am any good at all with regard to what I do, I can make you want to learn.â€
She taught Drama Studies at Howard University Theatre Department in Washington, DC and Tulane University in New Orleans, LA at the graduate and undergradute levels. She also taught costume and set design at LORT-East Profession Theatres, Ohio University, C.A.P.A. High School Theatre Department, and Northside Urban Pathways Charter School. It was never enough for my mother to simply spout words and comments to students, but very important that there was an atmosphere that allows the learning experience to take place. She believed that one could not teach a child who was worried about personal issues or one who considered education to be a punishment for living. Mary made her students feel safe by approaching her lessons in an unthreatening manner, making education a joyful experience.
We are having a celebration of her life and work on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Shadow Lounge at 9pm called TRIBUTE!
