LABCO History
LABCO dance represents a company of experienced professional dancers and choreographers with a collaborative spirit living in Pittsburgh. Providing performances, professional classes, and outreach programs, LABCO has become an integral part of the Pittsburgh arts community.
LABCO was established as an initiative of the Dance Alloy in September 1996. As of May 1999, LABCO was recognized as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. After several years of functioning under a collective philosophy, LABCO currently operates with a sole artistic director, Gwen Hunter Ritchie. Ms. Ritchie came to LABCO after dancing with Dance Alloy for five years and serving as Assistant to the Director for Malashock Dance and Company in San Diego for four years.
LABCO's company members are both well established and emerging dancers, choreographers, and performance artists who have come together in the Pittsburgh area, bringing with them varied movement backgrounds. LABCO members have performed in New York, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, California, and Europe. The artistic director, with the assistance of the company members, oversees classes, educational residencies, workshops, lecture demonstrations to universities, public schools, art festivals, and performances throughout Pittsburgh and other cities.
Labco Dance is included in the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour Roster.
Funding may be available to support engagement in DC, DE, MD, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, WV, and the US Virgin Islands.
