Phase 3 Productions is one of the most interesting and fresh theatre companies in the Pittsburgh area. Its vision extends beyond simply entertaining an audience. Central to the mission of Phase 3 is the inclusion of relevant social awareness in everything produced. It is from this important central idea that the season draws its motivation, its importance, and its fire. Pittsburgh theatre is full of interesting, important and socially aware theatre. However, this is expressed in a show by show basis. Phase 3 is unique in that it's entire season is an examination of a single issue from multiple perspectives.
Also unique to Phase 3 is the scope of the plays produced. Many theatre companies focus on single time period or region – making up for the lack of scope with the depth their narrow focus. Phase 3 is committed to producing theatre from the past, the present and emerging text that will be the masterpieces of the future. This translates to producing a classic play, a modern play ranging from the First World War to contemporary times, and a new work. Not only does this provide a variety of exciting and entertaining productions for Phase 3's audience, it allows for multiple lenses through which Phase 3 can focus on its central social theme. Time period and region are examined as influencing social issues, allowing a natural evolution of discussion to occur.
Finally, Phase 3 Productions is doing something that no other company in the area is. In order to more fully engage and promote awareness, every season Phase 3 will partner with a charity related to that season's central social issue. Ten percent of the profits from the season will be donated to the partner charity. In addition, the partner charity will be included in all promotional material and talk back sessions related to production. In doing this, Phase 3 is bridging the gap between intellectual discussion and effective change and encouraging our audience to do the same.
