Rumore Music Mag

English(thanx to Roby "MissMagoo")

Since its first pioneer edition in '93, the Festival Beat has been growing in an exponential way till today, both in terms of numbers and in terms of "artistic dimension", recording some shy and more or less successful attempt of imitation.
From a simple annual meeting for Italian sixties-maniacs, at the beginning for the limited hard core scene belonging to the darkest underground, during all these years the Festival has been turned into a sort of event which goes over the mere “technical” point of view, including both social and habit aspects.
Suffice it to say that during its latest editions, visitors come in their thousands, unlike the first editions with a few hundred people. For a movement which remains independent despite several trials of “absorption” and commercialization by the market, these results are extraordinary.
During the previous 15 editions of the Festival held in Castel San Giovanni, Nibbiano, Pianello, Zorlesco and Salsomaggiore, the purest garage-rock has found its ideal stage and an audience equally divided into passionate supporters and common beneficiaries of music who, thanks to this occasion, approached to this kind of timeless music for the first time.
The best ones of the Italian scene (Sick Rose, Others, Cosmonauti, Hermits, 99th Floor, Sciacalli, Uninvited, Head & The Hares, Ray Daytona, Rippers, Link Quartet) and big names of the international garage (the Scottish Thanes e Wildebeests, the Spanish Flashback Five and Doctor Explosion, the German Satelliters, the Swedish Maggots, from the USA the sixties legend Craig Moore, Gerry Mohr’s Get Lost, the Cynics and the English contingent: Mystreated, Nuthins, Embrooks, Diaboliks, Bristols, Masonics, Higher State, the big Solarflares) made the appointment with Festival Beat a special event because of its uniqueness, in addition to its undisputed quality of the offers.
Many operators of this trade, journalists, owners of little record labels, clothes, publications and gift goods sellers, collectors and simple curious people wandered round among its stands.
Also a "guru" of the new garage like Liam Watson, owner of the Toe Rag Studios in London and producer of the White Stripes, Yankee dominators of the charts all around the world, he is like one of the family: he played there twice, he went to the swimming pool, he had beer and salami for dinner. An excellent testimonial.
But if Mr Watson’s name does not say much to you, well, please note that the next edition, arranged by the organizers, will be richer, more lively and coloured than ever. If you have a look at the poster, you will realize that also this year fans will be spoilt for choice.
Four names among the others (I hope the others won’t get angry):
the Avvoltoi, a neo-beat institution from Italy,
the ‘garagers’ of our Majesty Masonics together with Ludella Black (quintessence of the British sixties),
the Swedish (gorgeous) Maharajas
and (rumble of drums) no less than the legendary Downliners Sect (yes, really), a piece of history, directly from famous clubs such as the R&B in Soho, when the Stones, the Yardbirds and the Pretty Things inflamed all the stages of the Swinging London, in the heart of the 60’s.
The new show will represent the 16th edition of the Festival Beat: not bad, if we think about how many times, periodically, this kind of music used to be considered as dead and buried.
So, the meeting is scheduled in Salsomaggiore for the first week-end of July, to have fun against those who think these performances are inflexibly “out-of-date”.
As if rock' n' roll would have an expiry date on the back…

Francais(thanx to Madmoiselle Fafa)
