Brian Muller picked up the mandolin in 2000 at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA, though his exposure to bluegrass dates back to the womb. He rapidly progressed as a player, taking 2nd Place at Galax in 2003. While attending William and Mary, he studied Music of the Southern Appalachians under Amy Wooley, PhD., participated in a Master Class with Mike Seeger on the application of mandolin in Old Time Appalachian music, and took an active role in the Southern Appalachian Music Ensemble, under the direction of Christopher Scales, PhD, sharing his fine technique and aesthetic sensibility with less experienced players. He studied mandolin with Pete Frostic, an Acoustic Disc recording artist with Old School Freight Train, exploring jazz theory and harmony, and Choro, Brazils traditional folk music. Brian has experimented with a new genre that he calls acoustic progressive metal and has completed an album of original compositions with his acoustic duo, Beast Infection, applying and breaking rules of theory and composition studied in the classroom, and bringing to bear diverse musical influences from J.S. Bach to Dream Theatre. Brian moved to London, England in 2006 and is now playing mandolin and singing tenor with English bluegrass band Buffalo Smoke.
