Anyone who likes good classic songwriting and powerful acoustic music will most certainly love the San Antonio based group Middle Ground. The group has a completely fresh take on Americana and acoustic folk rock music. Their entirely acoustic and eclectic sound (including a cello, violin and mandolin) lends itself perfectly to the truly poetic lyrics. The lyricist in the group (Kelly Miller) has grown up listening to Dylan, Springsteen, and Joni Mitchell. The rest of the group’s musical interests range from pure classical (Sophie Severance who plays violin is classically trained and sits as the concert master for the University of Texas’s orchestra) to CD collections of groups like Primus and Tool. Together, Middle Ground uses these typically conflicting backgrounds to form a unique yet enjoyable sound.
Recently, Middle Ground has made quite a splash in South-Central Texas . The group was honored by being named one of the best Americana groups in the area by the San Antonio Current. In late June the group will also be featured on KSYM’s Third Coast Music network to coincide with the release of their freshman, full- length album.
The tentative release date of this long-awaited CD will be announced soon, but it can be expected to show up on shelves by the end of July. Currently, The group has an EP that is currently available at their shows. The EP, Chataguay features new material including fan favorites like T-Shirts and Morphine and Hopeless Romantic.
