About Me

I am a funky soulful Drum and Bass DJ who has worked and participated in the music industry since 93. Have always been a raver and into the music scene since late 88. I first began to DJ when I was 13, playing Hip Hop and Electro with my mate Gary Purtil who had decks, I knew then that I wanted to get decks and DJ. I then got into Acid House/Rave music in 89 and sometimes had weekend parties when my mum was out where my mates would bring their decks round and I would play at any chance! In 1990 I experienced the delights of raving to Spiral Tribe, Sunrise, Bedlam, Cassingdon, Letchlade, Torpedo Town and Castle Morton Common outdoor festivals. Then onto clubs and events like Sterns, early Lazerdrome, Wonderland Arena, Rage, Dance Wicked, Evolution, Raindance, Zen and Yikes, during this time I was still trying to DJ with my small growing record collection at any opportunity. In 93 the music went all Jungle and I followed....
My working career started when I was Flyering for Turbo Promotions in 93, going up and down the country and at 'One Nation', Aldershot, every weekend getting paid a tenner for each club. Doing this got me into many of the clubs around the UK and there I met the Artists, my heros! I moved to London in 94 to the heart of DnB land - East London where I met a guy called Ricky who owned a DnB magazine called 'Prestige'. I told him my love for DnB and asked me to be a writer for his magazine. My first assignment was the 1st Voodoo Magic at Equinox and then went on to interview Bryan Gee, LTJ Bukem, DJ Hype, MC Skibadee, Tango to name a few. Doing this introduced me to many long term friends in the scene who I have worked with and still remain in contact with today.
At the time I hooked up with Lennie De Ice, who lived on my road. I was also getting into 'intelligent dnb' then and made a track in that style with Lennie in his little studio, bless, turned out ok I guess...but this gave me the taste of wanting to make music...I stayed with Prestige for a couple of years, did a stint on 'The Scene' magazine, then got into photography. I had the opportunity to take photos of Omar at the Met bar and of Project 23(Cleveland Watkiss) at Glastonbury 97 for various magazines. One of the highlights of my life!
Back on the music tip, I eventually got my studio and decks in 97 and had help from Danny Hoppa aka Hoppa and Bones to set it up. I made a few tracks at home but felt I needed to gain more experience. Later in 99, I did manage to collaborate with Shimon on a track and he gave it to Ant Miles to have a listen through, it was really good insight to see into a genius' mind...For certain reasons, I decided to have a break from making tunes and eventually sold my studio in 2000 :(
However, by that time I had already worked briefly for Electric PR - run by Laurence Verfaille, as a PR Assistant for DNB music then after that I worked in a Music store for a couple of years, opening up a new world of music in all genres to me.
In late 2000 I worked in Music production for Sound Performance working with numerous record labels, widening my contacts...Then I got my main break when I worked for the don Ray Keith at Dread Recordings. I managed his record labels, company, press, DJ agency and all promotions and events for four years. I even became editor of ATM Magazine but decided a change of scene was meant to be...I am now working in Complementary Medicine and loving it!
However, throughout my career I have been lucky enough to have DJed at Fabric, Bar Rumba, Herbal, Dogstar, The Jam Bar, Exit Bar, AKA Bar, The Clinic, Paradise Bar, Amersham Arms, outdoor festivals and even Heat Nightclub, Perth, Australia but one of my ambitions is to play at the End nightclub in London as it has one of the loudest and heaviest soundsystem. My name Lady Lena came about when I used to go to DnB raves and when I arrived and MC Stamina was MCing, he used to say 'Big Up the Lady Lena' so it stuck with me really. I have also presented my own Intrenet Radio show on PYROTECHNICRADIO.COM two years ago which I thoroughly enjoyed and hope to do more in the future. I have promoted our events called 'DEEP' with my DnB partner DJ Shutdown and will be updating myspace with future events. My DJing styles are more of the vocal and soulful side of DnB, mixing it up with some Old Skool flavours. However, I DJ anything, House,Old Skool Hip Hop, Soul, Indie, Rock & Pop, Funk as music is my life and life is my music.
