About Me
On the 14th of October 1972, Nicky D was born within the sounds of the Bow Bells and has lived in East London ever since. In 86 at the age of 14 Nicky was bunking off school every Friday afternoon to DJ for the strippers that performed at his uncles Pub. This was an eye opener for him (in a musical sense of course!) and his favourite music at this time was soul and disco music. In this time his uncles Pub (the Greyhound, Leabridge Rd, Leyton) was also a biker’s hangout and a music venue that hosted heavy metal bands and DJs over the weekends. After 11pm the Pub used to close and the bands would set up again underneath the Pub in the arches and play on till the early hours. In this time (Christmas 87) someone noticed the potential of the arches and requested to hold an Acid party. Thus the Dungeons was born. The Dungeons started hosting different promotions throughout this time namely with Hypnosis, Base 1001 / Voodoo, Empathy and 3rd Generation to name but a few. (See the picture gallery for Dungeons Flyers) At one point the dungeons was running from Thursday night all the way through to Monday morning. Nicky was working behind the bar and was wondering how these people could dance 10 hours solid without a rest to this unique repetitive beat. It did not take him too long to find out and got kicked out of school for going to lessons and being on another planet! He started harassing the DJs to find the name of the tunes as he loved this new music so much. In late 89 Nicky had acquired a collection of tunes and had the mixing skills to perform on stage with the main performers on the night. In the early Dungeons years 88-90 nearly every top DJ played at the Dungeons. (Be it Linden C, Ellis Dee Carl Cox, MrC Eddie Richards, Fabio + Groove Rider, Rhythm Doctor, Colin Favour Seduction etc.) The Dungeons held sporadic events through the 90s due to various legal issues. Throughout the 90s Nicky played on and off under different names (Nicky D, Mr Dangerous and lately Nicky Dungeons) and played at a host of different venues (Dungeons, Camden, Bagley’s, Mass) He has also played on many radio stations (London) over the years with London’s Freek FM, The original Touch FM, Risk and Ruud Awakening and more lately Unknown FM and Housefreaksradio. Throughout the 90s Nicky was also a total raver and raved on all the underground scenes up until 1999. Be it Acid House, early Hardcore, Jungle, D+B and even Trance at Sunny Side (Yep going from a Jungle dance to rave to Trance at 6 in the morning!). In 1996 Nicky was that bit older and started playing on Freek FM and started raving to UK Garage/ 2step. In 1999 the Dungeons reopened and Nicky started managing it through to the end of 2004. In this time the Dungeons held some legendary nights again (Audiophile, Re-Rave-All, Ruud Nation) and hosted many different nights with the free party collective. (Hedfuk, Malfateurs, Ugly Funk. Again see the picture galleries for Dungeons Flyers.) In the beginning of 2005 Nicky retired from the Dungeons and being a hardcore mentalist and hanged up his headphones. He travelled the world a bit and settled down into some sense of normality after 17 years of totally aveing it! After having a nice rest Nicky began to miss raving and meeting up with all the friends he had made over the years. In Aug 2008 he decided to make a tribute video called Lets Go Back as he totally loved the late 80s raving era and thought he should do something to commerate it. The video was a hit with many people enjoying it and saying how it bought them back...way back into time!! In 2009 the urge to once again DJ was too strong and Nicky came out of retirement. In 2009 Nicky again started playing 87-90s old skool and has been playing up and down the country playing at events like Retro Sonics, Epidemiks, Slammers, Earthquake and N-JOY to name but a few. Also in 2009 Nicky will be DJing in Cyprus and Portugal .
