Estilo Hip Hop

it's gone molotov!

About Me

Welcome to Estilo Hip Hop! If you're like us, you're probably trying to connect with a different type of hip hop experience, at least one that is to the far left of the U.S. mainstream. You're at the right place. Estilo Hip Hop is a documentary film that chronicles the lives of some crazy-ass, dedicated, freedom fighters challenging the system. Latin America and the Caribbean is their home. As we speak they're on the forefront, battling on the streets of São Paulo, organizing in the public schools of Santiago and Havana, and waging guerrilla warfare on the walls of Mexico City. Heads like you and us, connected through shared histories and personal experiences. Wanting change, but not the cosmetic type--like flipping one president for another, or substituting welfare for workfare. They're fighting for radical change. The type that will break down prisons and racist economic systems. Their preferred weapon of choice--hip hop.
What up fam. We are Vee Bravo and Loira Limbal aka DJ Laylo. Two New York-bred, working class/immigrant Latin@s with African and Indigenous roots in the Dominican Republic and Chile. Growing up our stomping grounds were Washington Heights and Far Rockaway and later on Crown Heights and the South Bronx. We love our communities, especially the diversity and the resiliency with which we survive, reproduce, and fight back. Both of us continue to work in our communities through autonomous organizations and independent efforts that promote social justice and the holistic development of young people. In particular, we conduct media literacy trainings in the hood, while developing safe and empowering spaces for young women of color. You can find us throughout the South Bronx, Bushwick, as well as the confines of Rikers Island building with heads about hip hop, media, prison, gender, sexuality and right to protect ourselves.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

ESTILO HIP HOP GOES WORLDWIDE!!!

MEXICO CITY
On August 25, 2006 Estilo Hip Hop premiered in Mexico City to a full house at the Cinetecas Movie theaters. Big shout out to the Aliados Sin Fronteras graffiti crew for organizing the event. MCs Eli Efi (Brasil) and GuerrillerOkulto (Chile) were on hand to perform, while renegade graffiti writer CEKIS (Chile) lit up the scene. This transnational exchange included a nationwide graffiti gathering and several community tours of the hood. The trip was a galvanizing experience for us all, one that took place during the tail end of the suspicious Mexican presidential elections and the growing unrest in Oaxaca. Shout outs to Humo, Mibe, Jessica, Mariela, Neitor, PESTE & REAL, Peke, Estado Kritico, y el Chanti-Ollin...

Nearly 200 writers throughout Mexico traveled to the nation's
capital to get down, and spread love.
Cerca de 200 escritores de graffiti atraves de Mexico
participaron en este encuentro nacional. La vibra era una de hermandad.

Eli Efi (Brasil) and GuerrillerOkulto (Chile) stepped to the mic and spit rhymes of fire!

THE DAY OF THE SCREENING
Two shook producers about to run for cover!

You know how our crowd gets down son!

They loved the film!

THEN WE WENT TO CHILE!!!
SANTIAGO & VALPARAISO

True story. We get to Santiago on September 10, 2006, the day the whole country takes to the streets to honor lost loved ones as a result of the September 11, 1973 U.S. sponsored military coup that ransacked Chile's democracy. Big shout out to everyone from RH2A (La Red Hip Hop Activista), the grassroots collective that organized the film screening and the nationwide hip hop activist forum in Santiago. We laos got to visit La Villa Francia and spend time with families and young people who've resisted 16 years of a dictatorship and 16 years of free market democracy. Big ups to Pia y familia, Social Washo, GuerrillerOkulto, el Profe, Gato, Anita, Romina, Bufonk, Los Blings (ahhh), La familia Vergara, El Giorgio y familia, Subverso, el Bandolero, Carlos Aranda, y todo los cabros...
