we can turn bad luck into a bad joke

About Me

i just passed in my last paper for my undergraduate degree in history. i take photographs. i need to find a few people to round out a band - if you play bass, sing, or play any interesting instruments and are interested in post punk, peace punk, or balkan music, get in touch. i'd kind of like to be in a band that sounds like joy division playing fanfare ciocarlia songs.

my current projects

mattcarrollphoto.com

my band resume:
locust hair syndrome (one show)
dance emma dance
the black freighter 1.0
the black freighter 2.0
bella ciao (one show)
the bad idea party
the menacingly effeminate (one show)

My Interests

photography, punk rock, social anarchism, temporary autonomous zones, interesting people, good books and zines

I'd like to meet:

kurt weill. or possibly an untimely end. i want to meet people who i can talk to about boa constrictors, primeval forests, and stars, and not bridge, golf, politics, and neckties. maybe politics a little bit.

Music:

peace punk, post punk, crust, grind, some 77 punk, jamaican music from 1959 to some point in the mid seventies, hip hop, soul, indiepop/rock, select folk and country, the smiths, chumbawamba, the world//inferno friendship society, fifteen, man man, husker du, the minutemen, stan rogers, the boys next door, sunday morning einsteins, the mountain goats, the pogues, the pixies, robert blake, the modern lovers, my bloody valentine, husker du, james chance and the contortions, woody guthrie, the trojans, skeletal family, those unknown, cocksparrer, fanfare ciocarlia, sin orden, wire, the ex, misery, amebix, kurt weil, crimpshrine, this bike is a pipe bomb, the sound, dog faced hermans, bread and roses, the minutemen, blitz, the magnetic fields, abe froman, gang of four, utah phillips, billy bragg, the birthday party, tragedy, submission hold, sam and dave, curtis mayfield with or without the impressions, antiproduct, the slackers, joy division, bauhaus, chokehold, unbroken, those unknown, blitz, the pinkerton thugs, showcase showdown, slapshot, the carter family, mission of burma, the vanishing, brigada flors magon, ballast, the modern lovers, a//political, ted leo/pharmacists, born dead icons, stiff little fingers, la fraction, post regiment, phil ochs, mirah, dog faced hermans, black ox orkestra, cracow klezmer band, sin orden, sin dios, the zombies, the adverts, generation x, leonard cohen, harum scarum, the weakerthans, magnetic fields, outkast, justin timberlake, the carter family, the cure, slayer, at the gates, nausea, wilson picket, james brown, stan getz and joa gilberto, zounds, the mob, cress, gorilla biscuits, spazz, swans/angels of light, erik peterson, neurosis, the velvet underground, the one am radio, they might be giants, catharsis, emperor, infest, unholy grave, blood for blood, nick cave, stan rogers, imperial leather, public image ltd, venom, motorhead, the mystic knights of oingo boingo, mischief brew, robert blake, cress, the blow, tom waits, new model army, beirut, neutral milk hotel, hammer of misfortune, devo, conflict, etc etc etc i could go on for pages because i have far too many cds and lps and i probably go to too many shows.

Movies:

i generally like art and trash. i'm equally a fan of wong kar wai and george romero zombie movies, if that says anything.

Books:

my favorite authors are jrr tolkein, jd salinger, and aaron cometbus. on the plane ride back from cork i was reading both the third harry potter book and borstal boy, by brendan behan, and i started conflating them in my head, which i think is pretty funny because one of them is about a young wizard in training and one is about a young IRA bomber in custody, but they both read like this british boys school kinda thing. i think one of the most important books i've read is probably howard zinn's "a people's history of the united states" because it's a great first step into any kind of radical consciousness. my eyes are bigger than my stomach, or my desire for books is bigger than my attention span for finishing them. that is why bookstores scare me because i don't have much money but i have stacks of books i haven't gotten to reading yet, and new books are a little scary under those circumstances.

Heroes:

at the moment, andy kaufman and assata shakur. this moment has been for quite some time now.
