This crystal is a diamond in the rough!

About Me

When Lala Brooks was fourteen, Phil Spector made the young Brooklyn girl the lead singer of "The Crystals". All her chart-busters rocked the Sixties. "Da Doo Run Run", "Then he kissed me", "He's sure the boy I love", "Heartbreaker" and "There's no other like my baby". She's in the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame. Then came Broadway. Lala was in the original Cast of "Hair". Her talent escaped no one. Author Galt McDemont gave her "Aquarius" to sing. The tune, like the musical, made history.Lala had fame. Next came her conversion to Islam a family with four children and a home in Teaneck, New Jersey. She put aside tours with Elvis, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Jackie Wilson and the Temptations to cultivate other facets of her life. During the last years, she lived in London for 7 years, and in Vienna for 10.Although "off the scene" by her own standards in the 70ies and 80ies, Lala did, however, continue to fulfill her destiny as an artist. In 1974 her tune "I'm a believer" became Number 1 on the pop charts in South Africa. During that time she recorded with George Benson, Pharaoh Sanders, Bobby Womack, The Fania All-Stars and the Neville Brothers. She sang the score and acted in "Cotton comes to Harlem". In 1996 she hosted her own R & B radio show in Vienna and released a CD. "Lala Brooks and friends" (BMG, Polygram Europe). Her family's grown, as has the depth and character of her amazing voice. Now Lala has returned to the U.S.

My Interests

Influences: I idolized Brenda Lee, a country singer. I liked her deep voice, the expression she made when she interpreted the songs and the phrasing. And I liked another singer called Baby Washington, a soul singer. She came in 1958 and heard her on the radio. I must have beeen about 11 years old. She had a very deep, seductive voice. I always listened to hear the meaning in the words, If I could not feel the way they expressed the songs with their phrasing, it didn't mean anything to me.I like Lauren Hilla and her lyrics. She is very dedicated to spirituality and she expresses this in her music. This is the road that I want to take. I want to be able to express a song that after someone hears it, they leave their surroundings with pure hearts. I also like Sade. I see where she speaks about so much of love and expresses it deeply. So this is where I want to expand the music.
