PAUL SAMSON

About Me

Paul Samson was the guitarist and founder of UK band SAMSON, who spearheaded the so-called "New Wave of British HeavyMetal" in the late 1970's. In between 1977 and 1984, SAMSON achieved chart success and sold out tours in various countries. Paul gave Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden his first break, and other SAMSON members included Clive Burr, Nicky Moore, John McCoy, Thunderstick, Chris Aylmer, Dave "Bucket" Colwell and Merv Goldsworthy. After the break up of SAMSON, Paul joined John McCoy's band, then formed Paul Samson's Empire. In the 1990's, Paul achieved success as a producer and solo artist, and reformed SAMSON between 1993 and 1994. Paul then headed in a blues direction, and played with artists such as Ric Lee, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Chris Farlowe and Ian Ellis, and spent a year in Chicago touring and recording with The Richard Black Project. Hopefully, one day these recordings will be released. SAMSON reformed in 1999, and were recording a new CD when Paul passed away in 2002. John McCoy has completed these recordings, and they have just been released as a Paul Samson Cd called "P.S...." by Angel Air. The samples on this page are from the new CD, see also the reviews below.

"This a worthy tribute to one of the unsung greats of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (Geoff Barton, Classic Rock magazine)
"Murder" is the stand-out, while the heaving "It's Going Wrong", with its twist of keyboards, would have brought any arena to its knees. McCoy did a superb job, completing an album that desperately deserves to be heard. A memorial to what had been accomplished, and all that Paul Samson was still determined to do". (www.allmusic.com)
"This CD shows the man had a lot more sensational to offer. Fans of Classic British Hardrock, like WHITESNAKE, BAD COMPANY, PAUL SHORTINO and the old SAMSON records will have to buy this CD asap". (www.strutter.8m.com)
"P.S.... Emerges as that most appealing of all poshumous releases, a memorial not only to what had already been accomplished, but also to everything that Samson was still determined to do" (Jo-Anne Greene, www.goldminemag.com )
Paul also appears on 8 tracks on John McCoy's anthology "Unreal", out now on Angelair (SJPCD195) ..

Samson - Biceps of Steel. Filmed at Londons Rainbow Theatre in 1980, it featured the line up of Thunderstick, Paul Samson, Bruce Dickinson and Chris Aylmer. This is the full length version, not the edited version on Bruces anthology. For all of you spotters out there, the part of the Roadie is actually played by Barry (Thunderstick) Graham wearing a dodgy wig and false moustache !
