Born in Willunga, South Australia, and raised on an almond farm, Jo Lawry lives and plays in New York, with the occasional jaunt north or south along the East Coast. She's currently working on her doctorate, but on the in-between is working on music for her quintet and a few other projects.
Some career highlights so far have been working with old and new jazz greats; Clark Terry, Renee Rosnes, Jon Faddis, Donny McCaslin and Lewis Nash among them.
Currently, her joy comes largely from working with some of her friends and heroes: James Shipp, Matt Clohesy, Keith Ganz, Kate McGarry, Ferenc Nemeth, Ben Monder and Steve Cardenas to name a few.
When she's not making music, Jo cooks a mean curry and dabbles in basic needle-point.
