My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.davidthornescott.com
Band Members: PIANO: Sometimes self-accompanied, sometimes Mark Shilansky
BASS: John Funkhouser
DRUMS: Jon Hazilla
SAX: Daryl Lowery

Influences: I started wanting to sing jazz when I heard Bobby McFerrin do his thing. Then I got into Ella Fitzgerald and sang along with her recordings. Take 6 is the harmony group that got me into vocal group singing. Mel Tormé is my role model of the complete package: vocalist, jazz stylist, arranger, jazz instrumentalist, entertainer, songwriter. He's who I want to be when I grow up, except I'm not sure how you grow up to be a popular quality jazz/pop singer in the 21st century.
Sounds Like: I've had people tell me I sound like Mel Tormé, which pleases me to no end. Also, some people say Chet Baker, and I'm down with that as far as the musicianship goes, but I'd like to think that I have a lot more vocal power than Chet. Others people have mentioned are Kurt Elling, who I love but don't think I sound like in the slightest, and Michael Bublé, who I don't really know anything about.
Type of Label: Major
