The Deviates began, at least in name, when drama teacher David Matroni declared that a group of his students were a bunch Deviates. This, he based on the wild claims of one of their members. Let’s just call him Leonard Cohen, a name he would adopt in an attempt to have himself entered into the school’s yearbook twice. (Unfortunately, his girlfriend was on the yearbook committee.) His claims may or may not have been as valid as the pseudonym.
As a creative entity, The Deviates began to form in the film department of said high school in 1976. The body was quite disparate in it’s make-up as jocks, actors, electronics nerds, gear-heads and artists filled its ranks. They shared a common irreverence and lack of maturity, as well as an affinity for comedy mainstays Monty Python’s Flying Circus and the newly inaugurated Saturday Night Live. The goal of most of their film projects was to emulate their comic idols, which as you might imagine, came off as not much more than plagiarism.
This “film making†would provide a springboard for the recording careers of founding members Brent Silveria and Dan Borba. In fact, a recently unearthed cassette recording revealed what is arguably the first piece of recorded music that the two new friends were to create. That being the “Pop & Ooze Dough Boy†commercial jingle. In the words of Leonard Pimpf-Garnell “That wasn’t so good, was itâ€. But, it did have the requisite inclusion of Brent playing an instrument and singing, and Dan operating a tape recorder, making this a landmark of sorts. Through the end of December 2007, you'll find this piece in the music player on this page. After that, who knows?
more to come...
The Deviates are quite proudly, the founders & sole operators of Cauliflower Transworld Delivery.
