If the curious name of this new Gospel ensemble doesnt grab your attention, then their songs will. Recently formed label Alliant Records and D3 Entertainment serve up newcomer Claudius Craig & Loose The Familiar, their self-titled project delivering 15 praise and worship cuts laced with a contemporary flair that is at once comfortable and fresh. On the opening piece, "King Of Glory", Craig hints at the meaning of his groups name, exhorting 'Cmon, loose the familiar'. He further explains in the liner notes that we "must not allow our familiarities in worship and our experiences with God to become traditions and altars...", thereby putting up barriers to accepting the new work He desires to do.Alliant head and industry veteran Paul Wright III joins with Craig in producing the album, filling out the songs with plenty of horns, strings and guitar pizzazz, helped by a stellar band that includes Rick Carter, Derriuex Edgecomb, Eddie Alford, Rick Watford and others.Several songs carry the project. Put a star beside "Great Is The Lord" and "Champion", both high energy praises that demonstate Loose The Familiars capacity for both vocal power and sensitive phrasing. Craig handles solo duties on both, as he does throughout the album. On "Jacobs Song", the scene of angels ascending and descending, taken from the Genesis account of Jacobs vision of God, is used to describe Gods presence over a nicely arrangement that features echoed lines between Craig and his ensemble. There are also several softer songs on the album, with worship focus. "We Cherish" and "I Worship You" are among these, with Watfords acoustic guitar up front. A couple of praise medleys round out the project. With a stated purpose to open the ear of listener to Gods presence, love and care, Claudius Craig & Loose The Familiar bring a welcomed recording, both in message and in music, to the scene.
