PAC's Statement of purposeThe purpose of the Pilipino American Coalition shall be to promote, encourage and to initiate programs which prove to be socially, educationally, and morally beneficial to the Pilipino-American community and to the Pilipino and Pilipino-American students at California State University, Long Beach.
PAC's Mission StatementThe Pilipino American Coalition is a student organization of whose goals are to nurture increasing cognizance of the Pilipino culture at California State University, Long Beach. These goals are actively equipped at helping young Pilipino Americans identify themselves through our Pilipino American history month as well as our Pilipino Culture Night. In addition to meetings that are held once a week on campus, PAC hopes to add social experiences by encouraging athletic competition, as well as events sponsored by other schools to help promote unity within Pilipinos as well as other ethnicities.
How PAC came aboutThe Pilipino American Coalition was formed from several pilipino students that took Asian American classes during the Fall 1971. With the guidance and help of Lloyd Inui, the head of the Asian American Studies Department at CSULB, Dr. Inui brought 7 pilipino students from two of his classes and the Pilipino American Coalition was established in 1971.
The original members are Glen Alona (Westminster HS), Betty del Bando Conchela Navarette (Los Alamitos HS), Marie SaHagun Taitague (Narbonne HS), Alan Constantino (Lawndale HS), Nathaniel Omingo (Long Beach Poly), Robert Coughlin (Somewhere from the East Coast) and Margaret Falarina (Mary Star of the Sea- San Pedro).
During the Spring Semester of 1972, the club picked up a few more people.who signed up for Asian American classes. During the Student Government elections that spring, Bob, Alan and a few other were helping in the elections, campaigning for the Asian American Candidate. The table was setup, going downhill to the parking lot by the Student Union (it was still being built). Slowly but surely the Pilipino's on campus started coming out of the cement buildings.
Today, PAC has become one of the largest and most influential Pilipino organizations in the state of California. Our purpose is to encourage and initiate programs that will be beneficial, socially, academically, and culturally to our members and the Pilipino-American community. Pilipinos consist of one of the largest Asian groups at California State University, Long Beach and with membership at an all time high, PAC will continue to be a strong organization for years to come.
