About Me

Jasvir Kang was born in Punjab, North India. During her time in India, she trained as a visual artist but it wasn’t until she arrived in England during the late 1960’s, that she realised her real creative passion was writing.Jasvir spent the 1970’s writing short stories and poems, reflecting her own experiences and the lives of South Asian women she knew. The stories spoke about the oppression and intolerances experienced by some women and the impact this was having on their family life. By the late 1980’s Jasvir had established herself as a confident writer within some sections of the South Asian literature community in the UK. In 1989, her first book of short stories called Geji was published. A further three more books were published in the 1990’s.By the early 1990’s, Jasvir began to seek new methods of reaching diverse audiences including pursuing a career in radio broadcasting. This led to her first presenting job on a Coventry (UK) based South Asian radio station called Radio Harmony. This followed presenting work with Radio BBC WM and Radio Sangam. By the late 1990’s Jasvir had established herself as a popular presenter on Radio XL (Birmingham, UK), where she discussed challenging topics, shared her poetry and stories with the listeners. The two other areas that have supported Jasvir to reach a diverse audience has included her involvement in the performing arts as an actress/ workshop facilitator (including work with Men Mela Theatre, Multi Arts Nation, Reminiscence Theatre, Pangran Theatre, Kali Theatre and the Belgrade Theatre) and the production of her two CDs featuring her short stories and poetry.More information available at www.jasvirkang.comTo listen to her radio show: http://www.radioxl.net/ Saturday and Monday: 8.00pm - 9.00pm (UK Time)
