About Me

About me? As in, of or concerning me? I'm just one of those lowly creatures, like all the rest that shuffle around on the earth's surface. Not much to remark about, but for the curious, I'll try. On the biographical: Basically, I'm a breather and seem to have been born mostly to do this single, recurring action. Genetically, sort of a mix of bent mirror images of my parents and ancestors. My dad I think of as a jolly but cynical robot; and my mother as some kind of dancing logic fairy. I love them both, but separately… very separately. Anglican features, mostly, with one eyebrow permanently raised in untrusting cynicism/curiosity. I move and talk slowly and deliberately, choosing my words and motions carefully, and hardly ever stay in one place. My actual personality you will find buried beneath layers upon layers of mechanisms for social adaptability - I think I lost my real self when I was about 14. A true child of America, with an overwhelming sense of impermanence, divorced parents, no respect for assumed authority, a soft spot for baked beans, and the illusion that I could win any street fight (along with a reasonably over-inflated sense of my own abilities in general). A real prize. I grew up in Oklahoma, but don't know how to rope a calf. I got a Boston education in Chemistry, but I can't mix paint. I have very little discipline in my life that I don't strictly enforce, and generally tire easily of anything which is not continuously surprising and changing. This is ironic though because to surprise me is exceedingly difficult. Most of peoples' shit I have seen before. That's what you have to love about people. They keep coming up with the same old shit. About me? I am who I am, and nothing more. The bunch of words you just read don’t really even scratch the surface… so come and meet me! Even if you hate me we can probably still be friends! This profile was edited with The CricketSoda Myspace Editor

My Interests

In no particular order: Chemistry, Tai Chi and Chi Gong, Off-roading or "mud slangin'" as we say in oklahoma, frisbee and footbagging (hacki-sack), fair trade, learning, wierdness, expatriating from the U.S., the conventions and inventions of modern language, travel, camping, singing, harmonica, painting, occult knowledge, maintaining lifelong friends, sustainable/minimalist lifestyles and practices, maximization of time for idle lounging, humility, political activism, scuba diving, distance bicycling or just riding a road/safety bike in general, chess, cooking, irony. Health and vitality. Transcendental meditation, “herbalism”, learning from other cultures, questioning, disappearing.

I'd like to meet:

Everyone. But let's face it... there just isn't time. Real people for sure. Probably not anyone over the internet. I don't know. I get along fabulously with hippie musicians, friendly spirits, the mentally “impaired”, the elderly, animals, scientists, people who suggest wild impossible scenarios in passing conversation, and the fashion concious (they see me as a challenging case study). I enjoy others' sense of style, so if you've got any, it goes a long way with me, but a preoccupation with appearance will turn me off very quickly. I mean real style. Originality. I want to meet people who want to hang out spontaneously, play games or sports, jam music, hop in the car for an impromptu weekend camping nearby, or just do outrageous unheard of things in general. Also, true honesty goes far with me. If you simply say what you mean and follow through with whatever you said, you will likely catch my notice because this seems to be rare nowadays. Too many people feign a willingness to do something just to temporarily impress or avoid awkwardness. Know yourself better than that. My feelings are not easily hurt. I like the people who ask the real questions, and those who aren’t afraid of the real answers. Also, I love to meet masters. I don’t say “I want” to meet them, but when they come into my life I tend to become fond and admire them endlessly. Masters of anything.

Music:

I can say a lot more about what I don't like than what I do, but here are some samples of both: I like old 60's & 70's Classic Rock, early 90's and modern Indie Rock, rap and hip-hop, classical, afro-worldbeat and other folkloric music from around the world, and a lot of other wierd eclectic shit. I don't like punk or metal very much ....and I can only dig country if it's folky. Blues and Jazz are classic. Golden Oldies from the 50’s and 60’s are awesome. Beatles, Led Zep., Ween, Sublime. I love flamenco music! Most pop music after the mid-eighties bores me. Anything that is original and from the soul will captivate me. My favorite music, though, is lyrical. There’s a warm spot in my heart for the rhyme of speech. When I can, I'm making my own music, whether I suck at it or not you are welcome to decide! Other than that, I have to say I love the music of the trees and the wind, and of the sun and the birds, and of the whales and the frogs.

Movies:

Thunderheart. Baraka. The Point. Labrynth. The Never Ending Story. The Princess Bride. The Matrix. Bruce Lee's movies. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Equilibrium. Adaptation. Real Genius. Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Clan of the Cave Bear. Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control (Errol Morris). Pootie-Tang. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Trilogy. Batman Begins. The Royal Tenenbaums. Zoolander. James Bond. The original star wars trilogy. Waking Life? Joe Dirt. Suspect Zero. Behind the Sun. Y tu mama tambien. The Wife. Fist of Legend (Jet Li). The Ron Fricke Qatsi Trilogy. The Caddyshack movies. Groundhog Day. Run Lola Run. Kinky Boots.

Television:

is evil trying to suck you into other peoples fantasies! I will watch if there is some pant-pissing hilarity on there, but generally I grew up without a TV and haven't seemed to need one in my adult life. TV's are too heavy to be lugging around anyway.

Books:

Dictionary. International spy thrillers by Eric Ambler (especially "A Coffin for Dimitrios"-- I highly recommend this one). Other than that I'm usually reading textbooks or other non-fiction. I hate the physical act of reading though. Moving the eyes back and forth!... way too repetitive an activity for such an easily distracted mind!
