About Me

I am a Ukrainian Francophile who loves to eat all sorts of South and East Asian food and drink Irish beer and Scotch whiskey. Though jaded and cynical, I am a sucker for whimsy. If I only have one cat, I can't be a crazy cat lady, right? Right?? I don't do the whole online dating thing, so if that's what you're looking for, don't bother trying. For your viewing pleasure, my photos are here (updated 3/10/07).
You Are Guinness
You know beer well, and you'll only drink the best beers in the world.
Watered down beers disgust you, as do the people who drink them.
When you drink, you tend to become a bit of a know it all - especially about subjects you don't know well.
But your friends tolerate your drunken ways, because you introduce them to the best beers around. What's Your Beer Personality?

My Interests

I enjoy: running insanely long distances; foreign travel; hashing; Democratic politics; good alcohol (especially if it's single malt Scotch); yoga; impressionist, post-impressionist, and modern art; rock climbing; Duke basketball; Michigan football; Kostume Karaoke; checking out local bands; playing cricket (the kind with darts, not bats); and a thick, juicy steak.

I'd like to meet:

Extroverts, policy wonks, Democrats, runners, drinkers, those who do both of the above simultaneously. Fans of all Detroit or Michigan teams. People who hate suburbia. Whoever either stole or didn't deliver my Economist, so I can kick his or her ass, and then get all the Economists I've been missing.

Music:

Any sort of rock, be it classic or indie. Either in heavy rotation or on my to-buy-or-download list are: Dandy Warhols, Interpol, the Shins, the Flaming Lips, the Kills, Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie, TV on the Radio, U2, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Shortstack, Sonic Youth, Beirut. I'll go see just about anything (that's not too top-40ish, or country) live, and in addition to rock I love a good jazz or blues show. Most recently acquired: Locksley--Don't Make Me Wait. Last saw: Scissors for Lefty w/ Locksley.

Movies:

The Big Lebowski--actually, anything by the Coen Brothers, Clerks, the original Star Wars trilogy, Monty Python & the Holy Grail, History of the World, Part I, Sideways, all those high school in 80s movies, the Indiana Jones movies, Casablanca, the 40-year-old virgin, and anything else that makes me either laugh or think. NO romantic comedies--they're never funny. Last saw: Notes on a Scandal.

Television:

The Sopranos on the rare occasion that it's on. The Simpsons and Family Guy when I remember to. South Park, the Daily Show, and the Colbert Report when my Comedy Central isn't all screwed up. A lot of football, basketball, and hockey (I only like baseball if I'm at the game, though my Tigers are in the playoffs!). I really miss The West Wing and Sex and the City.

Books:

There are far too many to pick a few favorites. As far as fiction goes, I'll read it if it's well-written, but I love anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison, Jack Kerouac, Dave Eggers, and Philip Roth, and I may as well admit I take guilty pleasure in Stephen King or my friends will call me out. Siddhartha really struck a chord with me. If I'm reading non-fiction, it's likely about politics, foreign policy, national security the First Amendment, or some combination of the above. Now reading: The Work of Nations.

Heroes:

I've never wanted to emulate anyone in particular--why follow another when I can blaze a trail?
