Fatboy began as an idea in the minds of Thomas Pegge Pareigis and Alf Östlund in the beautiful summer of 1996. They were both experienced musicians, and had been part of the Swedish rockabilly scene since the early eighties. The inspiration came from card sharks, gentlemen and gamblers, such as Faron Young, Curtis Gordon, Buck Owens, Wynn Stewart, Geoff Perks and Ray Price, and they were now in need of more players with aces up their sleeves.
Alf found his trump: Hannu Kiviaho, a player with roots in Jyväskylä. He owned a telecaster, was in to Patsy Cline, and had a past with Memento Mori and Ingo & Floyd. Hannu told Pegge that he rehearsed in the same place as drummer Richie Terseaus of glam rockers Stars On Mars. Rich soon joined the boys at the table. During the summer of 1996 they started rehearsing together, only to realize that they were in need of some languishing tones, played by a stylish man. Alf had heard of the old hard rocking Jan Lissnils (Reptile Smile), who had gone from the distorted Les Paul sound to a Fender Sho Bud Pickin Steel Guitar. He agreed to join the band, on the condition that he didnt have to cut his hair. Sure, said Fatboy, already on the phone with the barber.
And so there was Fatboy.
During 1998 Stockholm was the cultural capital of Europe and Fatboy were hired as musicians and actors in Nya Pistolteaterns rendition of a Brecht opera. The weasels from The Wind in the Willows were given a whole new meaning with Fatboy giving shape to Mackie Knivens gang of thugs while countryfying the original Kurt Weill music from the twenties.
In 1999 the band expanded with the sound of Jocke Lindahl, from Delsbo, playing guitar, banjo, six string bass, and doing harmony vocals. He had it all drove a Volvo, wore frilled shirts and was able to sound like James Burton. Then finally, in the fall of 2003, the band was complete, with Jörgen Jugglo Wall as the new percussionist. He used to play with Hannu in Ingo & Floyd and is today one of the most skilled and sought after musicians in the country.
