Anthony Giles: Biography

Anthony Giles attributes much of his success as a percussionist to the strong rudimentary foundation instilled in him at an early age. In spite of growing up in a non-musical family, Anthony quickly developed a strong independence in learning music and in maintaining a disciplined practice routine. As he began performing in the Ontario drum corps scene with The Cardinals of Scarborough, Anthonys high level of potential was rapidly being exposed in provincial level competitions. In 1997, he was honoured to accept a position with the eight time world champions, Cadets of Bergen county Drum and Bugle corps; an opportunity known only to the finest drum corps percussionists in the world. While with the Cadets, Anthony performed extensively at a competitive level in various parts of the world. With the goal of broadening his musical spectrum, he began studying music performance and composition at Humber College where his uniquely creative writing style was received with considerable mention. Through this experience, Anthony established himself as a highly reputable freelance musician and composer; some of his commissioned works include television commercials for the Warner Brothers network and CBC; a featured composition for the Halton Youth Symphony; and various other performances and compositions in a wide range of musical settings. His most recent project marks the beginning of a highly influential career on the jazz fusion horizon. Anthony has just released his debut, full length CD Modality. Comprised entirely of original material, the album showcases the colourful imagination that defines Anthonys musicianship. As head of the percussion department at the Merriam School of Music, Anthony has worked significantly in the development of the percussion program and continues to motivate and inspire his students toward fullness of their potential.
