Born in Canada's capital region, Tony Almonte is a musician, driven by the floating rhythms of world beat, jazz/funk, R&B, house music, hip-hop & "ambient techno". Tony is 2nd generation musician. His Afro-Latin roots originate from Dominican Republic and his artistic roots are solid; James Brown, Carlos Santana, Juan Lui Guerra, 440, Fela Kuti, Fania All-stars, Ruben Blades, Willy Colon, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Lauryn Hill, D'angelo, Erykah Badu, etc...
Now Based in Montreal, Almonte is a proud member of The VooDooMonx! His involvement as a contributor to the rhythm aspect of The VooDooMonx is without a doubt, attributed to the chemistry between the band members as a whole. Now in a winning formation, the world is now within reach!
Primarily a musician and producer, he is dedicated to two key elements; rhythm and melody. A seasoned “congueroâ€, Tony Almonte journeys through the universe of sounds, since childhood. As a percussionist, he has collaborated with various artists, the everlasting Doobie Brothers, Aliens, Bet. E & Steff, Dibondoko, the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble from Chicago, Kahil El'Zabar, Azuka, as well as D.D. Jackson and without forgetting the legendary saxophone player Hamiet Bluet, of the World Saxophone Quintet.
Nominated at the "Gala des Culturiades 2003" of the "Fondation des Arts, Lettres et Culture" for the "New Technologies" prize and at the CBC's Broadcasting award ceremony, Almonte stands out with his presence, his groove and his desire to communicate with his audience. His rhythmic interventions, and the maturity of his compositions, make Tony Almonte an artist who carries emotion through expression.
Known particularly for his involvement in pieces written by the American Roy Davis Jr., Kemetic Just from San Francisco, Miguel Graça from Portugal, Canadian house sensation Fred Everything, Rise Ashen, and the master of groove Trevor Walker. His performances have lead him to collaborate on records and compilations under several labels, notably: EMI Boston, Bombay Records (Vancouver), Pronto Musique, Guidance Records, Nordic Traxx, Kinkysweet, Fossilfuel Records and more...
Over the years Tony has shared the bill with some of music’s most cutting edge acts and globally renowned names in the electro scene, namely: Joe Claussel, Peven Everet, Roy Davis jr., Tokyo’s UFO, Jazzanova, Rainer Truby, Talvin Singh, Llorca, St-Germain, Louis Vega, Derrick Carter, dj Sneak, King Britt, Andrea Parker, Banco de Gaïa, dj Heather, Jojoflores, Nav Bhinder and Patrick Dream and many more…
Tony's biggest accomplishment would clearly be his involvement with CBC Radio one, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. (Canadian equivalent of the BBC) Working two years, mixing and featuring globally renowned electro-jazz artist on the international circuit and featuring Indie label acts, "Le Mélange des Genres" had two successful seasons, broadcasting to 500 000 listeners weekly. In this context, Tony Almonte remains the first ever dj to hold a residency on the CBC roster, also first allowed to merge other artist's work live on air. He is known to be a risk taker, yet acclaimed for getting the job done properly and with respect to the integrity of the original tracks produced.
With particular attention devoted to detail and logical progression, M. Almonte's sound could be described as: dynamic, charismatic, jazzy and silky smooth, yet explosive, live or in studio!
