I have been a professional trumpet player since 1978. Most of my work has been performed in Adelaide and has covered all genres of musical styles including symphony and chamber orchestras, Big Bands, Rock/Blues/Funk/Latin bands, backing international artists, Stage shows, recordings and session work, as well as soloist for weddings and funerals, and brass and military bands.
I completed matriculation (year 12) in 1978 and, whilst still having formal lessons from Standish Roberts (former principal trumpet player - Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO)), I was offered casual work with the ASO. This association with the ASO continued until I left Adelaide in May 1998 to take up a full time position with the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon.
After completing my B.A. (Performing Music) degree at the South Australian College of Advanced Education, I was offered a 12 month contract as 2nd trumpet with the Elizabethan Melbourne Orchestra (now the State Orchestra of Victoria) in 1982. At the completion of that contract, I returned to Adelaide and was offered a full time position as 2nd trumpet in the ASO. During the 2 years full time with the ASO, I successfully completed a B.MUS (Honours) degree from the University of Adelaide.
Over the next 14 years I forged a successful commercial career as a trumpet player (all genres) in Adelaide. I was employed by major touring shows during that time which included Evita, Song and Dance, Phantom of the Opera, Barnum, Les Miserables, Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, Cats, A Chorus Line, 42nd Street, Nicholas Nickelby, as well as others too numerous to mention.
Many international and local artists have also relied on me to support them as a lead and section trumpet player. This list includes artists of the ilk of Ray Charles, Shirley Bassey, Kenny Rogers, Riba McIntyre, Tim Rice/Elaine Page, Bobby Rydel, Andy Williams, Anthony Warlow, Ricky May, Darryl Somers, Jackie Love, Julie Anthony, Marina Prior, Barry Crocker, Jackie Trent/Tony Hatch, Nancy Hayes, David Atkins, Kate Cebrano, Glen Shorrok, Gene Pitney and Sir Harry Secombe. I have also been recorded on numerous radio jingles and on Australian Cast recordings of Evita and Barnum, as well as to add brass to a myriad of commercial band recordings.
A need to go back to my symphonic playing prompted me to join the Australian Army Band Adelaide as a reservist in 1995. This association with the Army Band Adelaide continued until 1998 when I decided to sign up on a full time basis. My experience and knowledge has been a valuable asset to the Australian Army Band Corps and my work within the Army, and as a free-lance musician, enables me to foster my own professional standards. This benefits the Army's standing within the local arts and musical community.
Outside of my musical employments, I worked as a full time public servant between 1985 ¬and 1998. My first position was with the Australian Taxation Office, followed by the Department of Social Security and finishing with the National Police Research Unit (AFP). My tasks in those organisations included Administrative duties ranging from payment of accounts, purchasing, personnel issues, supervision, vehicle fleet management, stores management and archival of records.
Since commencing with the RMC band in 1998, I have worked with Rob Guest, Grace Knight, Margaret Urlich, James Blundell, James Morrison, John Farnham, Kylie Minogue, Gina Jeffreys, Doc Neeson, Phil Emmanuel, Don Burrows, Bob Barnard and Rhonda Birchmore. I was posted to the Australian Army Band Kapooka between 2001 and 2005 and returned to the Band of the Royal Military College Duntroon from the beginning of 2006.
Highlights of my Army life have included three deployments to Bougainville, three deployments to East Timor, one deployment to the Solomon Islands, an exchange to the New Zealand Army Band, performing in an international Marching Band Festival in Tokyo, carrying out changing of the guard duties at Buckingham Palace and performing at Fort Cornwallis in Penang, Malaysia.
My interest in music extends to all genres of the art form, but mainly includes all forms of Jazz and Classical. I am also a volunteer Radio Presenter for Canberra’s ArtsoundFM.
In 2007 I commenced a Master of Management postgraduate course at UNSW@ADFA. I am hoping to complete by the end of 2008.
