Reading Nature Center

I am here for Friends

About Me

In 1936, a group of local naturalists organized the Ferndale Nature Club. With the assistance of the Bureau of Recreation and interest on the part of the members, the Ferndale trail was developed. Before the Nature Center became the Nature Center, it was a farm house lived in by the Bingaman family. The Family lived and farmed the land until the City of Reading purchased it in 1874. In 1915 the building was used by Visiting Nurses as the Fresh Air Baby Farm. Which means they nursed sick babies back to good health. From 1936-1951 The museum was called the Ferndale Nature Club In 1957 The Bureau of Recreation assumed sole operation and the museum became what it is to this day...THE READING NATURE CENTER The Reading Nature Center is located on Hill Rd. near Antietam Lake in Lower Alace Twp. We are a non-profit organization. We specialize in group tours of our museum and the surrounding area. Our main goal is to promote environmental awareness through the use of activities and hikes. The Nature Center is a great place to bring the whole family. There are miles of trails that lead all the way to the Pagoda. We also have Antietam Lake, a great place to sit back, relax and try to catch a fish or two. The Reading Nature Center is currently under the ownership of the City of Reading, Pa. You may have heard on the news or read in the paper about the contraversary that surrounds the lake. As of now Berks County is trying to take the land by Eminent Domain. This is a good thing. If this happens the land will be preserved forever. To show your support, join us at the nature center. Bring the family, schedule groups or just stop by to say hi. The trails are open to the public everyday. The museum itself is only open from April to November.
