Air Guitar UK in association with The Air Guitar World Championships present: The UK National Finals .
It is with great pride that we can finally announce the 1st ever official Air Guitar World Championship affiliated National Championships for the United Kingdom!
For years now the UK's Air-guitar scene has been an underground movement surfacing in clubs cabarets and bedrooms around the country. There have been many well respected Championships, but for years our various champions have been left to send themselves to the World Championships in Finland unofficially, self-financed and against great odds (the complexities of Finn Air and lost instruments), yet the only human to win the World Champion title twice in a row was a Brit. What were we thinking?
ALL THAT HAS CHANGED! Newly sanctioned by the global family, the great force will be channelled and after UK National Finals on the 1st September 2006 at the Islington Academy in London and we will be sending the first recognised UK National Champion to Finland to compete on the global scene. It will be a great moment.
So come all you gracious and noble unwashed; come with glorious hearts and gurning faces and prepare to leave as rock stars. Prepare to leave victorious.
"I've been trying to get someone to do it like this for 5 years now, I'm over the moon man, I'm so happy! It's like invisible trail of sticky goo that now binds us to the other Nations. Bring it on!" Zac Monro alias 'Magnet' one and only 2 time World Champion (now retired).
The Prize:
Well, aside form the glory and the stories you'll be able to tell your grandchildren when they ask what you did in the naughties: On the 6-7th September you will be sent to attend the Air Guitar Training Camp in a secret remote location in Northern Finland, you will train with the best, you will be tweeked, prodded and finely-tuned and you will feel the vibe. And then on Friday the 8th September you will automatically qualify for the Air Guitar World Championship final at the biggest Rock Venue in the Country! Your flights will be paid for and your stay at the world-famous Cumulus Hotel for Air Guitarists will be paid for. Then it will all be up to you.
But if you win there, your world will change forever.
Philosophy:
"The Purpose of the Air Guitar World Championships is to promote world peace. According to the ideology of the Air Guitar, wars would end and all the bad things would disappear, if all the people in the world played the Air Guitar. This is why the whole universe is invited to play the Air Guitar at the end of the competition."
Air Guitar will save your life.
Instant therapy and a force for World peace, you cannot underestimate Air Guitar. All of humanity is there. And as the only Art/sport devoid of product placement and financial reward it is the last remaining true and pure art-form.
As the only activity on stage that takes place without rehearsal, props, a voice or anything but the soul borne to the baying crowd, it is the one true test of man.
And as the legend has it, a time will come when all will put down the cell-phones which burden them and the weapons that burden others, and pick up their Air Guitars together as one, and a new civilisation will be formed.
"You can steel our mobile phones, our cars and the shoes on our feet, but you cannot steel something that is invisible."
"All that is solid melts into Air" - Marshall Berman
"You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist" - Indira Gandhi
"Thanks. I like to play." - Garth Algar
Rules:
1 - You have 60 second, not 59 seconds and not 61 seconds. You have 60 seconds to prove your worth.
2 - You must have a guitar and it must be made of air and therefore be invisible.
3 - You must play either an electric guitar or an acoustic one, or another kind of guitar, but you can't just make it up.
4 - There are 2 rounds to the competition, the 1 st is 60 seconds of a song/track/noise of own choice. If you get through the 1 st round there's the 2 nd where you will play the 60 seconds of the compulsory song: a song so complex and demonic we will only play it you at the beginning of the round, so you will basically have to summon a performance out of thin air.
(Having submitted the track details in the entry form, the competitors must bring submit their personally selected songs with them on a CD. The competitor may edit the song beforehand so that it lasts one minute, or alternatively let the organisers know the point from which to start playing the song).
5 - Air Roadies are allowed on stage up until the 60 seconds. Pedals/Amps/effect modules/ Backing groups and Whole Air Bands- are not allowed in any visible form. What goes on in your head is your own affair, this is a Championship not group therapy. If your lucky we'll let you use a real pick.
6 - There is no dress code.
Judgement:
The jury of the UK National Finals will be selected by the Board of Air Guitar UK. They will be figures of repute.
The Judges are asked to consider the following when making judgment:
1 - Originality: We've seen a lot already, many times: try to take the art-form somewhere new!
2 - The ability to be taken over by the music: Forget where you are, this is rock and roll.
3 - Stage Charisma/Presence: When the sun sets and the drunk angry crowd who all think they're better than you get going, you'd better pray some subconscious primordial instinct takes over and you can make that connection.
4 - Technique/Technical Ability: If you miss a few notes or chord changes that's all good, but if you get up there without a guitar and just mime along to the music, you're not going to make it with anyone anyhow.
5 - Impression: From the heart my friends, from the heart.
6 - Airness: If you define a thing it loses its power, so lets just say its probably the ability to transcend the reality of all of the above. Probably.
Marks are given from 4.0 to 6.0
