The first Air Guitar World Championships were arranged in Oulu in 1996. In a decade, the competition has expanded into an international network of national championships. Besides Air Guitar players, a large group of media people and Air Guitar travellers are flown to Oulu every year. The event that started out as an absurd idea attracts and interests people all around the world.Like a polished diamond, the AGWC Network has grown and prospered in ten years to a world-wide realm of 12 official AGWC countries. Canada will make it's first ever appearance in 2007! The crème de la crème of Air Guitar competes in national championships before coming to Finland for the battle of the best. One of them is annually hailed as the Air Guitar World Champion, the master of an invisible instrument.What Air Guitar is all about, is to surrender to the music without having an actual instrument. Anyone can taste rock stardom by playing the Air Guitar. No equipment is needed, and there is no requirement for any specific place or special skills. In Air Guitar playing all people are equal regardless of race, gender, age, social status or sexual orientation.Air Guitar has been played for as long as electric guitars have wailed as the ultimate instrument of rock music and the guitar heroes of rock bands have been adored as idols.
