Congo Square Theatre Company originated from an idea from two theatre artists from Howard University. The ensemble members have earned their M.F.A.’s from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Pittsburgh, and UCLA. In addition to their educational backgrounds, ensemble members have studied, performed, taught and directed in such countries as England, South Africa and France.Founded in 1999, Congo Square mounted its first production, August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, in the fall of 2000. The play made a remarkable first impression on the Chicago theatre industry:“..with its exceptionally impressive debut production of The Piano Lesson, this troupe is showing an awareness of quality and integrity that bodes well for the future.â€
