To Mona, with love...

It's really cool when you find someone from your past...... I found Mona G.We went to school together, and graduated together, but I was invisible, wanting to sink into the woodwork, while she took life on like a firecracker! We talked for a few minutes today, and she wished me a happy birthday. I wanted to reach out and hug her, even though she was very far away. She's gone through some tough times, as we all have, and some of us continue to do. She's fighting a battle that is very important to her. I'd love to find a way to help her win that battle. Our children are very important to us, and especially to her, for very specific reasons. Looking back, I can see Mona in my mind, and see that the tough exterior was maybe the product of some hard times as a child. I wanted to be like her then..... to be able to be blonde would have been a good thing... but that wasn't it. It had to do with how she presented herself to the world. She doesn't think of herself as having been popular, but to one who really wasn't popular, you WERE Mona! You shone like a star, with all the accompanying explosions and power that comes with it. When Mona was there, you knew it. She didn't have to announce it, you just knew it. You could see and hear her, and it wasn't loud or obnoxious like some people get. Her presence was vibrant. I was so busy trying to stay out of the way then, it was inevitable that I would get picked on once in a while. Mona never was one of the people who did things like that. She always said hi, and smiled, and asked me about the artwork I was doing at the time, and it was mostly in passing, but she was nice. I wish I had known then that she was having a tough time. I couldn't do anything about it, except be her friend, but I would have done that, and hoped it made things better in some small way.She's brightened my life today, and brought back a little nostalgia. Now, I need to find my high school yearbooks, and post my (awful!) graduation picture. Then I will curl up with my daughters, and tell the stories of the people in the pictures, and some of the things that happened then. Some day, I will see Mona again. I know we will keep in touch. It's a new friendship, and with MySpace, it will be easy to send a note back and forth every so often. She's writing a book...about her daughter, and injustices that were done. I will read her book, and share it, and promote it. Maybe it will inspire me to get going on my own dream, too. Something I've wanted to do for a long time. I want to write the story of Katie, my autistic daughter. See? We never know whose lives we touch, and what kind of impression we leave, but if we're really lucky, someday we'll find out. I'll put a face to my name soon, Mona. It's only been 32 years since graduation, and remember, I was invisible then. You can't remember what you can't see. I've gained some confidence, and some wisdom since then, and when my kids (kindergarteners) at school say hurtful things, I find it doesn't bother me. I had good training at CHS. And besides, I love them. That fixes everything in the end.
