About Me

"To know how to say what others only know how to think is what makes men poets or sages; and to dare to say what others only dare to think makes men martyrs or reformers - or both." - Elizabeth Charles, British writer (1828-1896)Al Viz is the epitome of the rappers rapper, in an age where rappers claim to be hustlers first. When his older cousin gave him his first mix tape on his 6th birthday, he became infatuated with the power that comes with putting words over beats. His craft really began to pick up when he came to the realization that breaking down the intricacies of reality will almost always be more intriguing than anything fabricated. Al Viz strives to create a sublime sound in which he, as the emcee, never becomes ‘bigger than the music’ itself. He has culminated his style by listening and studying the greats over the years, and puts together tracks with one word in mind... classic.“My goal is to invite you into my thought process, show you my ideals, my pitfalls, and what I believe in. If I do that and you can feel me or be entertained than I have achieved the ultimate artistic reward. There is no limit to what I will spit about in a track as long as I’m feeling the beat and the beat inspires a topic that I have an attachment to. So what makes my style my own are my thoughts, opinions, my voice, the words I choose and how I deliver them. All rules are out the window, I try and make my own conventions. I am a Russian Jew living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada but what I really belong to most is the daily struggle to maintain mental balance. What hip hop and more specifically rap has given me is a feeling of strength and optimism which is the most I can ever hope to give back to it through my music.”

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Al Viz (Emcee), Fat Count (Producer). Extended family: Zolis Audio
Influences: My dad, who taught me to be straight up to a fault. My mom... who has the ability to convert everyday struggles in to a smile. Hulk Hogan (cant front, I feel thats where I got alotta my ethics towards people growing up). My cousin, who handed me my first tape... dont think he knows what he set off. Grish (aka Fat Count)... who came just when I thought I was gonna throw this music all away. Bathurst and Steeles... where an accent like mine is cultivated. Rakim where I got influenced to be the laid back type emcee who gets lost in his own train of thought... theres a mystique to the calmness. Nas... his crazy ability to shift gears in his narrations from bar to bar (also one of the few people on the planet I will stand 2 hours in the cold for to see live). Jay Z, Pac, BIG... they sounded like they were talking to you, and thats why people loved them. Pete Rock... for T.R.O.Y. ... thats reason enough to thank the man. Wu-Tang... will people that raw ever run this game again? Jimi Hendrix... the chaos in his work coulda been the background music of my life at many points... I could never sing but if I could remotely, id probably come off like him. Magic Mushrooms... a couple of life altering trips. Struggle, pain and failure... which gives me new perspective on life and a basis for my music, among other things. Travelling... blew the lid off my universe... and I thought my block was the centre of it all. The gym... prepares me for the battle that will hopefully never come. Napoleon Hill... it all starts with a thought.
Sounds Like: hopefully a breath of fresh air
