Fondling my nicotine patch, writing comedy sketches, still getting soaked in the pissing rain (seriously, June is tomorrow- could the temperature get above 12C/50F degrees?), racking my brains trying to solve the blind items on Crazy Days and Nights, still watching hours of telly (*ahem* well it IS my job), entering into hours of internal debate each day about going to the gym, googling rednecks I hated in high school and uni to laugh at how they've messed up their lives, still regretting my constant forgetting to use waterproof mascara, selling my soul to get my shows commissioned (Beelzebub_329 get back to me on that please), trying only half-heartedly to conceal my looks of contempt at the insanely loud office administrator who sits across the room from me, and preparing for doing a live comedy routine this summer. Yep, I know. I'm so nervous I'm touching cloth.
Okay, news flash on this front- I got to meet Graham Linehan two weeks ago. He and his wife were leaving the BAFTAs and I approached him- well, I say approached him, but I kind of jumped on him and proceeded to in the most cheesy manner gush forth with statements pronouncing him the saviour of comedy, and let's face it, the world. He was amazingly tolerant and friendly. So that was cool.
Stephen Fry on the other hand I didn't have the guts to talk to. I totally chickened out at the BAFTAs, but at the afterparty I followed him around the room for about 20 minutes. Directly behind him. It was fun and certainly provided me with a contact high. But one person clocked what I was doing. That was funny. There are a lot of people I would love to have a beer with, Stephen Fry being my ultimate. I just adore him. But I would also like to meet Sir Digby Chicken Caesar, Jack Black, Rik Mayall, Emo Philips, Xenu, Lili Taylor, Bez, Paul Simon, Al Franken, Rob Corddry, Robert Smith, Siouxie, Jon Stewart, Eddie Izzard, Richard O'Brien, Bill Clinton, the Beatles, Bernie Mac, The Mythbusters, Nez, Alan Carr, Dot Cotton, Mick Jones, Miss Understood, Jo Brand, Lauren Bacall, Kathy Burke, Chris Morris, Dylan Moran, Margaret Cho, anyone from the IT Crowd or Monty Python, Sinbad, loads of other comedians, Rowan Atkinson, and RuPaul. And Gene Wilder and Graham Linehan again, please.
And anyone who is funny, intelligent, and kind. And likes a beer. And preferably a drag queen.
A new friend has recommended this group Hot Chip. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. I refuse to take the cd out of my car stereo. But generally speaking, I must be getting old because I am certainly entering that 'those whippersnappers today don't know good music' phase. So I like older stuff- love jazz (esp. Miles Davis, the king) and big band, Madchester stuff including the Smiths, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, and Inspiral Carpets, Chapterhouse, Dillon Fence, Scissor Sisters, Jane's Addiction, Ultra Vivid Scene, The Clash, They Might Be Giants, Duran Duran, Old REM, Onionz, Scott Henry, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, The Specials, Weird Al, Elvis, World Party, Simon and Garfunkel, Beastie Boys, Cure, Beach Boys, Beatles, Jesus and Mary Chain, Monkees, any classic rock, 80's soft rock (like Journey, Air Supply), De La Soul, Depeche Mode, Stevie Wonder, Tribe Called Quest, Sting, Rage Against the Machine, Prince, I will add more as they come to me...
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Moulin Rouge!, Fantasia, School of Rock, To Wong Foo, Muriel's Wedding, Brokeback Mountain, Some Like it Hot, Coen Brothers films, Philadelphia Story, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Wizard of Oz, any Marx Brothers film (esp. Monkey Business and A Night at the Opera), UHF, 24hr Party People, any Tarantino film (esp. True Romance), any Tim Burton film, Reality Bites, Merchant/Ivory anything, Farrelly Brothers, any Jackie Chan, American Beauty, Singles, Indiana Jones, Rabbit-Proof Fence, I Shot Andy Warhol, Hairspray, Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, both of the Chocolate Factory movies (although Gene will always be Willy Wonka), Run Lola Run, Chariots of Fire, Princess Bride, Bridget Jones, Million Dollar Baby, Star Wars, Mel Brooks (esp. Young Frankenstein) and John Hughes films. I love Southpark and Team America. Lots of Jim Carey films- Spotless Mind, Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, Truman Show, Man on the Moon.
Anything by Graham Linehan, especially Father Ted, Black Books and the IT Crowd. British Comedy alone is enough to justify humanity's existence (take note, JP Sartre) so I love the Pythons, Coupling, Mitchell and Webb, The Office, Fawlty Towers, Alan Partridge, Young Ones, Bottom, Brass Eye, The Day Today, Red Dwarf, The League of Gentlemen, Mighty Boosh, HIGNFY, QI, Blackadder, Fast Show, Harry Enfield, Dirty Sanchez, Dragon's Den, Project Catwalk, Corrie, etc. American shows- SATC, Seinfeld, Three Stooges, Cheers, Your Show of Shows, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Chapelle's Show, Mythbusters, Bernie Mac, My Name is Earl, Fat Albert, Get a Life, Simpsons, MST 3K, Jackass, Cosby Show, Viva la Bam, Bosom Buddies, SNL (1989-1993, RIP), Futurama, Will and Grace, In Living Colour, Monkees, Dog the Bounty Hunter, America's Next Top Model, You Bet Your Life, It's Gary Shandling's Show, Southpark, 24, Prison Break, Lost, Friends, Daily Show and any of those cop shows with that ex-cop with the luminous teeth who says that everyone is going straight to jail. And Kath and Kim. And Big Brother, which I have loved since the first series.
Yes, I adore books. I cannot get enough of them. Way too many to list. Will most likely never fill this out.
For those looking for a hero, here's one- Lt. John Withers. If you don't know his incredible story, cut and paste this link. I haven't read anything like it. http://isurvived.org/InTheNews/WSJ-folder/wsj-article-112503 .html
