If you haven’t heard about the ‘Hand Cart Bwoy,’ you must be living in a cave on a remote, deserted island because Perfect is one of the most powerful, intriguing and refreshing voices on today’s Reggae/ Dancehall scene.
Born Greg Rose, he grew up in the cool hills of Bamboo in the parish of St. Ann. His father owned several jukeboxes, giving him full exposure to the rhythms of Jamaica. He counts Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Toots Hibbert as some of his early favorites.
From as early as nine years old he was a primary school entertainer. This stardom exploded as he entered York Castle High and by the eighth grade he was a superstar, performing regularly at school concerts. After leaving high school, Perfect went to Kingston to get a first-hand understanding of the music business, spending time at studios like Penthouse, King Jammys and Arrows while he fine-tuned his art. Returning to St. Ann, he started appearing at dances and stage shows every chance he could, causing his popularity to soar until his name was on everyone’s lips.
Determined to break into mainstream recording, Perfect recorded a few self-produced songs in 2001. Building on that successful effort, he recorded Sweet and Black, an album with a blend of classical and refreshingly new, soul-reaching messages. Most recently the airwaves have been blazing with the smash hits ‘Hand Cart Bwoy,’ ‘Amerimaka’ and ‘No Badda Mi’ from his 2006 album release Giddimani on the Tad’s label in the U.S. and DHF Records in Europe. He has already been recognized with awards, placing third in IRIE FM’s Big Break competition in 2003. He has been making regular show appearances, and “locked up” Sumfest with a scintillating performance on Dancehall Night in 2004.
A Rastafarian, Perfect’s lyrics are deep and straightforward yet unforgettably melodious, leaving you to listen over and over. Simply put, he keeps his lyrics real and unapologetically uses music as his medium for education and self-awareness, with hard hitting titles like ‘Eight Gangsters’ and ‘Black Marcus.’ So, are you ready for the Hand Cart Bwoy? As the radio DJs say, “Here is the man, who is perfectly Perfect.”
