Mr. JaPan

This is my world through a crimson colored lens...

About Me

By day, I work in the publishing industry in Champaign, Illinois, USA. By night, I never know what sort of artistic tangent might sweep me away for hours on end. 24/7, I'm just a regular guy with extremely irregular activities, hobbies, and goals. Forever and ever, I probably will be known in certain circles for my semi-underground mag MICRO-FILM. My Interests

Filmmaking and film journalism/analysis; Alternative cartooning; Underground culture; Famous monsters; Photography; Illustration; Self-publishing; Blogging; Mass media issues; Music; Nature and geography; Prehistoric life; Local history; Coffee shop lounging; Koalas. Don't laugh. Koalas kick ass.

I'd like to meet:

People who are honest and willing to work for what they want to achieve in their lives; people who constructively explore the creative arts by not only experiencing but doing; people who exhibit good humor and find the joy in what they do.

Music:

The Beatles, Midnight Oil, Billy Joel, Extreme, The Ramones, INXS, Crowded House, Poi Dog Pondering, Wilco, Ani DiFranco, Neil Young, Carrie Newcomer, John Mellencamp, Neko Case, HUM, Radiohead, Poe, Lanterna, Suede, Pet Shop Boys, Goldfrapp, The Darling Buds, more.......

Ones you know: 2001, Star Wars Episodes IV-VI, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Bladerunner, A Hard Day's Night, Time Bandits, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Batman Begins, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, The Commitments, Back to the Future, The Re-Animator, Beetlejuice, Harold and Maude, anything w/giant Japanese monsters or a stop-motion King Kong or "Ray Harryhausen" in the credits, more ..... Ones you probably know: Hero, Waking Life, Pi, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, American Movie, Ghost World, Primer, Oldboy, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, American Splendor, nearly anything w/Bruce Campbell, more...... Ones you should get to know: Existo, The Five Obstructions, Nothing, Tully, The Independent, Nothing So Strange, Living in Missouri, Charming Billy, Lethal Force, The American Astronaut, Sex Machine, The Interview, Radio Free Steve, Scumrock, Bullet on a Wire, The Saddest Music in the World, Laughing Boy, definitely anything w/the phrase "Killing Michael Bay" in the title, more...... Television:

Not a regular TV watcher - I barely even know what's on anymore - but I can do Law and Order, The Simpsons, The X-Files, Cheers, Frasier, Night Court, M*A*S*H, South Park, and so on.

Books:

I wish I read a lot more than I did. My current lit is a mix of Web sites, zines, newspapers, comix, and non-fiction that I leaf through for research. I can tell you that my favorite book is Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, however.

Heroes:

Mom and Dad, John Lennon, Ray Bradbury, Jim Henson, Forrest J Ackerman. And, of course, Existo.

It’s 2 in the Morning. Who Left the Lights On?

Oh, I hate when I do this. It happens once every couple of weeks. I come home from work, diddle a bit, think I'm taking a brief nap, and then realize it's already the witching hour. It's a bad habit e...

Nourishment of Champions (Not What Mom Taught You)

So, I'm laying in bed at 2:30 this morning and I realize that amidst the hubub of last night - which wasn't anything particularly astounding or distracting - I had a medium size coffee, a chocolo...

Memorial Day Blahs and the End of an Era

I'm at work right now. At least it's overtime. I heartily thank our country and those who died for it to allow me this freedom. Um, yeah. Glad I freely owe a bunch of money elsewhere and, therefore, f...

Don't Come Near Me. Really. Don't Come Near Me.

Don't you hate it when you get just sick enough that it disrupts your weekly activities, but not so sick that you're laid up in bed for days on end, which means you still feel obligated to take care o...
