Bill Mentz.......Groove!

About Me

A very well known composer of theater once said, “He climbs under the skin of the song and makes you believe it's about him.” That award-winning composer goes by the name Richard Jennings and he was not referring to himself in the aforementioned quote. He was speaking of the ubiquitous musical styling of Mr. Bill Mentz. There are many great musicians and singers but there are only a select few that know how to dig deeper and find their hidden inspiration or that inner essence that many of us like to call soul. On the surface, Bill Mentz is a jovial, charismatic, and witty performer, but beneath the surface his heart sings a passionate song that has touched and connected with countless soul-seekers across the nation. Bill Mentz has been captivating audiences, touring nationally and abroad, and recording music since 1974. From studios to stages he exudes an incomparable brilliance and undeniable passion for his craft that few in his class can match. Bill’s experience is not to be overshadowed by this passion and musical aptitude. He has not only recorded and released 6 albums/CDs; his various talents have also been called upon for numerous commercial jingles & voice-overs. With thousands of live shows around the globe he has proven that the stage is his home away from the home he shares with his high school sweetheart, Margie. Serving as his wife and his inspiration, Margie is Bill’s driving force behind his illustrious career. Speaking of Bill’s career, he has lent his talents and fronted bands that include everything from the harmonious sounds of a trio to the orchestrated sound of a 13 piece horn band. Bill possesses that rare yet oxymoronic quality of humbled confidence. It is the very quality that allows him to bond with an intimate crowd at quaint bistro in Point Richmond, California or marvel an audience of 65,000 at the Sternwheel Reggata in Chareston, West Virginia. Bill’s resume reads like the Billboard Charts all time greatest musician’s list. He has worked with world class entertainers from all over the world and he continues to record and perform with the crème de la crème of the music industry. Bill Mentz has had the privilege to share the stage with the likes of: John Denver, Richie Havens, Poco, The Beach Boys, Pat Boone, Conway Twitty, Dottie West, Ray Stevens, Bo Diddley, Lee Greenwood, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Temptations, Tommy Castro, Chuck Berry, Mary Wilson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, and a host of other accomplished artists. As the leader of such awe-inspiring bands such as Night Flight, The Celebration Band, The Van-Dells, Strong Current, The Howlers and the Clevers, Bill has led many of his band mates to the musical promised land where rhythm, melody, and harmony come together in a vivid expression of emotion. In 2006 Bill was asked to sing the National Anthem for the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park and the San Jose Sharks at the famous Shark Tank. In a continuous effort to bring his very best form of Blues, Jazz, and Soul, Bill just released a compilation CD in Feb. 2007 entitled, "For the Life of Me" which covers recordings from 1986 to present.

Influences: I've been influenced by most every great singer I've ever heard, especially live. Elvis, Tom Jones, Tony Bennett, Al Jarreau, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, k.d.lang, David Clayton Thomas, Johnny Adams, Michael Buble, Dionne Warwick, Kurt Elling, Gladys Knight, Eva Cassidy, Mario Lanza, Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti and the list goes on for days.HOWEVER!!!! I was REALLY shaped as a singer by some of the singers I got a chance to work with and go see "live" locally in Cincinnati (some great stuff). Steve Coghill, Denise Gonzales, Ed Hedges, Al Woo, Dixie Karas, Stacy Todd, Mark Barnett, Dave Brumley, Ricky Kellogg, Jelly Roll, Julie Sheldon, Donna Huntley, Gary Boston, Jerry Van Blair, Rob Fetters, Mike Fletcher, and I'm sure I missed like 50 people, but you get the idea.
Sounds Like: One of the remarks I rarely get is that I sound like somebody else. I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I guess it would be cool to be compared to one of my idols. I was told once that I had hair like John Travolta, so I got that goin on.
