Ryuzo’s interest in Butoh was confirmed after attending a Butoh workshop led by Semi-maru from the group, Sankaijuku, in 1987.
In 1991 Ryuzo joined the Butoh group Maijuku directed by one of
the leading figures in Butoh, Min Tanaka. Over the following years, Ryuzo made regular appearances with the group in major dance
pieces such as Rite of Spring at the Prague National Theatre, and at Geijutsu no Mori Bijutsukan, in Hokkaido, Japan; and in Oedipus during the 1992 Saito Kinen Festival in Nagano, Japan.
The piece featured a world-famous cast and the Saito Kinen Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa.In 1993 Ryuzo returned to solo performance, basing himself in Nagoya, Japan. The following year he created “Nippon Gyo Gyo†- a project investigating the relationship between the body and the performance site. For 49 consecutive days he traveled Japan,
creating spontaneous improvised performances/interventions in 182 famous tourist sites around the country.
Two years later, he formed his own dance company
“RYUZO+ Alchemic Sis†and commenced his career as a choreographer, developing a unique vision of Butoh that is totally independent of the traditional definitions of choreography in classical ballet and modern dance.
Both the name of the dance group, and the dance pieces choreographed by Fukuhara over the following years are influenced by his extensive research into the work of Carl Gustav Jung. His work as a choreographer was recognized in 1998, when he was nominated to the semi-final, and presented his work, IN THAT CASE, at the Japan Platform of the Rencontres Choreographeques Internationale de Seine-Saint-Denis, France, one of the world’s most well-respected choreography contests.From 2000 onwards, Ryuzo switched focus to Europe, commencing with residencies organized by the Foundation and Center for Contemporary Arts in Prague, and at Cite International des Art in Paris. He has performed held workshops in many countries, including the UK, Italy, the Czech Republic Slovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, Germany, Austria and Russia; and more recently the USA.
