About Me

I draw comics and try not to default on my student loans.
For more info (on the comics, not the loans) visit: WWW.SHORTPANTSPRESS.COM . They're good people, plus my books are all for sale there.
I just started a new TOUR JOURNAL blog for my sketchbook drawings and other related artwork. I think it will be fun.
Plus, I write a weekly blog for www.lovechicago.org called BLAH BLAH BLOG . It's basically me telling stories about interesting things I witness and experience in Chicago.
For more information, videos and photos concerning the infamous Comics Art Battles, of which I was a part of quite a few, please visit: WWW.COMIXAPOCALYPSE.COM
Additionally, I've played my part in THE SKELETON NEWS , a Chicago-based monthly underground paper.
Plus, here's some lovely Exquisite Corpses I helped make back in the day with the old HAIRY NIPPLES COMICS CREW (Lucy Knisley, Bernie McGovern, Jeremy Tinder, Lilli Carre, Onsmith, et al). They're pretty wonderful.
REVIEWS:
"Singularity (Al Burian and Grant Reynolds, super team up)" -- Quimby's Quimblog Best of 2007
"Ah, here's another one of those wonderful shorties where, if I talk too much about what's going on, the whole surprise ending gets blown. I'm all for mayhem in space, which appears to be what's coming here, so three cheers to the both of them." -- Optical Sloth, Singularity
"It's a comic book and a record, all in one! It's gorgeous. It follows Achilles in hell, as everything is stripped away from him but he can still remember his love, Briseis. So, while undergoing grotesque transformation after grotesque transformation, he endlessly searches hell, looking for his lost love. This is probably the most disturbing thing that Grant has done, and I say more power to him. He should revel in ugliness like this more often." -- Optical Sloth, M'Lady Serene: Tales of Achilles
"...a collaboration between the Peoria, IL based hardcore/americana band Scouts Honor (No Idea Records) and the Chicago, IL based comic book creator Grant Reynolds (Shortpants Press)...This is the best work we've seen by both to date!" -- Art of the Underground, M'Lady Serne: Tales of Achilles
"Reynolds does a fantastic job of echoing the lyrics in his images...His art conjures up scenes of desolation and desperation...however, Reynolds' mini is also uplifting and rewarding." -- The Drama #9, To the Mouth of the Source
"He uses very few words, masterfully weaving together recurrent Newsom motifs: bones, white coats, water, gnawing, night. When strung together this way - and when accompanying Reynolds' expressive images - the lyrics take on new meaning, while still adhering, remarkably, to the overall mood of Newsom's songs. Indeed, this book is right on." -- Punk Planet #76, To the Mouth of the Source
"This may be the best of [Grant Reynolds'] comics." -- Optical Sloth, To the Mouth of the Source
Phantom Power Comics Podcast review of To the Mouth of the Source.
"Grant Reynolds has become one of my favorite indie comics artists lately, and this self-published compilation of five shorts is a good example of why. His dreamlike transitions -- from a grassy hill into his lover's furry arms, from a mountain into a mound of blankets and back -- set his narratives in the shifting, indeterminite spaces of the psyche." -- Christa Donner (Ladyfriend #10), Smaller Parts
“An exquisitely illustrated seafaring mini-comic.” -- Atomic Books, Deep Sea Trouble (from Smaller Parts)
"Finally a hefty collection, Grant has been doing some of the most interesting and cutting edge comics in Chicago for a while. A great well-rounded introduction to his work." -- Logan Bay (Quimby's, Lumpen), Smaller Parts
"Here it is! The perfect chance for you to see a whole bunch of Grant Reynolds all in one bundle. ...Overall, this book made me want to pull the covers up over my head and just think for awhile." -- Optical Sloth, Smaller Parts
"This is a pretty slick production. ...Fans of John Hankewicz and Anders Nilsen should check this out." -- Copacetic Comics Company, Smaller Parts
OTHER REVIEWS:"Number two: Grant Reynolds, Smaller Parts" -- Francois Paultre, Giant Robot magazine #52, Five Great Cartoonists Who Still Self-Publish (Bless 'em)
"Garfield the cat gets it on with a pan of lasagna and other images from the depths of the author's sketchbook. Printed for the Skeleton News Memorial Day Benefit Brunch. Note: Slightly grease damaged by brownie." -- Chicago Underground Library (www.underground-library.org), The Lost Dirty Garfield
"Chicago has been a kind of breeding ground for cartoonists and transplanted cartoonists who have been big influences on me. Aside from my colleagues on The Holy Consumption, there's Dan Clowes, Chris Ware, Archer Prewitt, Ivan Brunetti. There's also some good young cartoonists here who are headed in the right direction—Lilli Carre, Grant Reynolds , Jeremy Tinder, and Jesse McManus. All three have produced scattered small works, but have the potential to become standout cartoonists" -- Jeffrey Brown (Clumsy)
"...Grant Reynolds' Elfworld story, called Unwelcome Halfling, one of my absolute favorite submissions." -- Francois Vigneault (Elfword editor)
"...A fantastic page by Grant Reynolds is a big highlight." -- Punk Planet #75, Love, Chicago Magazine
"Published by New Reliable Press, Y.A.N.D. is pretty damn good... a few strips do stand out. Mainly, the work of Hope Larson, Meg Hunt, Patrick Murphy, Jeffrey Brown, K. Thor Jensen, Blaise Laramee, Grant Reynolds, Lilli Carre, Phil McAndrew, Dalton Sharp, Dalton Webb, Jon Sukarangsan, and Neil Babra." --Brett Warnock (Top Shelf), You Ain't No Dancer
"(He) turns in a moving meditation... As you move from picture to picture, the tone gets increasingly darker." -- Shawn Hoke (Size Matters), Those I've Known (from Last Cry for Help #5)
"Another strange moment, dare I say nuwave, with Reynolds' excellent line and drawing style." -- Logan Bay (Quimby's, Lumpen), Snowglobe
"A brand-new, shit-hot 96 page comics anthology featuring work by Grant Reynolds, Lilli Carre, Becca Taylor, Sara Parker, Marco Torres, Shelly Dodson, and more!" -- Quimby's Books, A Pictorial History of the Great Outdoors
"Grant Reynolds has contributed to many anthologies and produced his own comics over the years, and keeps a website which features a page of his “tour drawings” which are a collection of great sketchbook pieces. Check his site for distribution outlets of his comics as well." -- Meathaus.com
“Here is a rare chance to see the development of a unique voice in the world of self-published comics...How can I describe the work?” -- Bowzizzer.com, Counting My Teeth
"Oh yes, texture, struggles, turmoil. A great artist. A great storyteller." -- Rick Weaver (The New Flesh)
“It's amazing, I think. His drawings reach a genuine pathos, the bittersweet connection into a real investigation of territory that feels very human to me. The drawings match perfectly, unexpectedly, to his topics. Most admirable is the emotional range he shows--there is no easy reach here. Happiness is mixed with sorrow, all comes indistinctly woven together in a way that feels real rather than gray. He is not muddled at all. What a humble and extensive imagination! The stuff of real life. He has my admiration." -- Dan Beachy-Quick (Poet/Professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago)
"I was amazed at how he captured such a precise experience with a couple of drawings." -- Sara Varon (Sweaterweather)
"Chicagoan mini-comics mastermind." -- Al Burian (Burn Collector, Milemarker)

Grappa said to him, "Did you ever brush your teeth with your finger?"
"I brushed my teeth with my finger the first time I stayed overnight at my wife's parent's house, before we were married, when her parents spent a weekend at Asbury Park. They were an Ipana family."
"Forgetting my toothbrush is a fetish with me," Cotsakis said. "I brushed my teeth with my finger at Woodstock, Altamont, Monterey, about a dozen other seminal events."
Grappa looked at Murray.
"I brushed my teeth with my finger after the Ali-Foreman fight in Zaire," Murray said. "That's the southernmost point I've ever brushed my teeth with my finger at."
Lasher looked at Grappa.
Grappa's response was semi-lyrical. "A great and funky men's room in an old Socony Mobil station on the Boston Post Road the first time my father took the car outside the city. The station with the flying horse. You want the car? I can give you car details down to the last little option."
"These are the things they don't teach," Lasher said.
