For me, Woody Guthrie is Oklahoma's favorite son. America - and the many growing pains of the 20th Century - are better for having known him. Woodrow Wilson Guthrie split his heart open, in laughter and sadness, in thousands of songs, writings, and drawings as he traveled through life, always a troubadour/tireless advocate for the well being of people everywhere.

Myself, Mary Jo Guthrie Edgemon (Woody Guthrie's baby sister)

I am directly related, by blood, to the following surnames: Kelly, McDaniel, Farley, Elsey, Farwell, Smith, Middleton, Alexander, Crawford, Gunter, Gunther and many more, I’m sure. Alas, I don’t know the Cherokee surname – or If there was an existing surname – of my Great-Granny Middleton’s Grandmother, Mary Alice Gunter, who is my connection to that ancient world and the Trail of Tears removal. Gunter was her married name, and it Isn’t presently known if her husband was Cherokee or if he was given the white name of Gunter/Gunther.
