Flana Star......
A celebrity can be made. All it takes is a personal commitment by a person to do whatever it takes to become famous. This could include going through an appearance makeover, fitness regimens, vocal training, media training, dance lessons, acting lessons, and many other things that require large amounts of money, time and effort. The end result may be fame, fortune and international recognition, but even the most popular celebrity must constantly face the reality of being replaced. Stars, however, are not made, created, synthesized or copied. They have an inner light that shines naturally, along with talent that cannot be taught. A star has sex appeal in the most conservative clothing. In the presence of power, a star can simultaneously show humility and confidence, never losing the cool demeanor of greatness. In other words, Flana Star is not a celebrity and will never be, because she has been a star all her life.Long before the music business came knocking on her door, Flana Star always knew that she was special. Not only had she been equipped at an early age with all the star qualities that it takes to enter the entertainment industry, Flana had another advantage that would guarantee her arrival at center stage. Ive always been highly competitive in everything, she states. I always pushed, and I have always believed. Her self-awareness can be observed from all angles from her elegantly relaxed posture to her warm smile, but it is most notably felt when the voice behind the shining smile can be heard. Beginning with gospel music, Flana would raise her voice whenever she heard a melody that she could reach, whether it came from the radio or the choir. And although she never had a formally-trained vocal coach, she credits music education classes in grade school for broadening her understanding of music of all types, sending young Flana searching for what would become her own personal style of soul. As her tastes began to develop, Flana found herself becoming partially biased toward R&B, while growing fond of pop, hip hop and jazz as well. She also studied the contemporary R&B divas of her time, admiring Whitney Houstons vocal ability as well as Janet Jacksons stage performance. Ambitious people sometimes say things like shoot for the moon, because even if you miss, you will land among the stars. It didnt take long for Flana to make a decision. I realized that somewhere in between was where I wanted to be, so I went straight for it, she remembers. In her case, going straight for it meant aiming and landing directly inside the circle of influence within the music industry. As the grand prize winner of the 2004 Pepsi Smash contest, sponsored by Vibe Magazine and Atlantas number one urban station V-103, Flana Star was chosen from a pool of 500 contestants, proving herself as a superlative songwriter, a standout vocalist and an electrifying performer. She is now working non-stop on her own debut album with one of Aftermath Records veteran multi-platinum producers, Focus. She bridges the gap between Mary J. Blige with street, and Beyonce with class, Focus declares. Plus, shes quite focused; she doesnt like to waste time, she just knocks it out. Flana returns praise to Focus, who she says has always totally supported and encouraged my creativity, which is clear when listening to collaborations like Hot & Bothered and Scandalous, songs that entice with alluring sensual invitation. There is also No Pleasing You, a fiery ballad for women and men that cannot meet halfway that displays Flanas honesty in dealing with the experience of love. Other songs like All Of The Things, produced by DJ Don Cannon of The Aphilliates, and Baby I, produced by multi-platinum Bad Boy producer Adonis, are sure to give Flanas debut album, A Star Is Born, the perfect balance of hip hop, R&B and pop music to accompany a voice that has been described as universal. She has recently finished toured the Southeast performing and promoting her singles, and has been featured several times in Black Radio Exclusive (BRE) Magazine. Having the support of industry heavyweights has also given Flana access and the ability to lend her talents to some of todays most notable artists, including Bonecrusher, The Outlawz and Atlantas own Stat Quo.At this point in her career, the only figure with whom Flana Star competes is herself. My challenge is to figure out the formula to express all subjects - all aspects of love, and of life. In the meantime, she continues to raise her voice to the sky with both feet on the ground, remembering that she is not a celebrity. It is understood that those who chase stardust will come and go, with new blood never too far behind, ready to pick up the trail. But there can only be one star of the show, and the audience always knows the difference between stars and celebrities. A star is not created; a star is born.
