About Me

My name is Mandy Curties, and my stage name is Mandarella. I live in Brisbane Australia. I have been busking from Covent garden, London to Ephesus amphitheatre, Turkey. I am currently rehearsing a new act, "Vermin Magic", a family Magic show for busking Southbank and private parties."Vermin Magic" is a show about mice and rats, guinea pigs and rabbits, with Magic, acrobatics! I continue to perform as Mistress Mandarella, but am starting to perform as Mandarella the Magician. At Ephesus, I do Opera busking. While studying at UQ, I worked at 4zzz FM and editted the student paper, Semper Floreat. I've worked for theatre companies from UDS to the Arts theatre, La Boite, QPAC, BLOC, Toadshow. Michael Edgeley's Aida was a highlight in 97. Whilst playing in bands, I joined Vulcana Circus and learnt acrobatics with Baldrick and Pandora. I worked with Chae and Michelle as Flaunt Circus, doing trio acro from 2000. From 2003-5 I lived in Perth, managing the West Australian Circus School, Cirque Bizirque. I've been performing as Mandarella since 2002, and produced my first theatre show, "Mistress Mandarella's New Boots" in 2007 at the Powerhouse. This show includes songs, acrobatic tricks and an adults only comedy magic act. Clips from this show and others I have directed or filmed are viewable at www.youtube/msmandarella or at myspacetv. Otherwise, I look after my 4 year old daughter, Veronica,the dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, fish and possums, work in the garden, ride the bike, swim, and take trips to the sunshine coast and stradbroke island for the beach and snorkeling. I like yoga, all styles of music, and am very interested in politics. I have a foster daughter in Uganda and encourage others to be community spirited.

I'd like to meet:

I love meeting other performing and visual artists, or anyone who uses their creativity.I particularly admire performers or artists who have a political or social element to their work, without bashing the audience over the head.It's never been more important to strive for world peace and preserve our planet, and everyone can help in some way.I'd also love to meet other acrobats and buskers to compare experiences. Are we all nuts?

Music:

From opera to jazz, rock to hiphop and dance music, I'll listen to most music. I love singing and play keyboards, violin, tambourine, hand drums. I've sung with 3 bands, Delta Nine THC, the Bignotes and Axolotl; nobody outside of Brisbane would have ever heard of them.

Movies:

I enjoy most films if not too formulaic or full of mindless violence. I like them well written, funny, ones that make me think a bit.

Television:

That's that thing I put DVDs in for my daughter to watch

Books:

Is a room full of books too many? I've got fiction from around the world, non fiction on a large range of weird topics, Psychedelics Encyclopedia, Satanic Bible, Africa on a shoestring, The Razor's Edge, I could go on forever.

Heroes:

Peace makers, Philosophers, Writers, Performers, Artists, Philanthropists, Equilibrists, Adventurers, Explorers, Politicians who are for the people and the planet.
