Mr Steve Black, where do we start………………?
Sound Engineer, Producer, Remixer, Radio Host, Lecturer and Trend Setter!
Steve Black was one of the “new wave†of Australian dj’s that found fame in the public eye in the year of the millennium.
It was y2k when Jason Midro offered Steve his first dj set at the Bass Station (not knowing that six years down the track, Steve would be passed the crown of head resident) and it was y2k when the rave goliath “Pharmacy†opened its doors for the very first time with Steve as one of its residents.
These two clubs shaped the man he is today.
He soon began to take Melbourne by storm. His totally renegade mixing style, frequently over 3 turntables and sometimes even mixing with his feet, accompanied with his insane stage presence, landed him a slot at nearly every event that was held within the next several years to come.
This then led to a Dj Duo with Melbourne icon “Dj Hellraiserâ€.
They supported a plethora of massive artists on tours around the country including Dj Craze, Public Enemy’s Dj Lord, dj Scot Project (on his maiden voyage to the great land), hennes & cold, ASYS and Dumonde just to name a few.
As he matured so did his style of music. Several years down the track his sound began to evolve into a techno & trance mish mash. With a heavier influence coming from his techno roots, he began to lose a significant amount of gigs sportin this new style. He was a bit before the times it seemed, as this new found style would later become a whole Genre which takes the world by storm……..
You guessed it, Techtrance!
This obsession with this hybrid sound would seep into his studio productions and after several years of perfecting his sound he unleashed Australia with several tech-trance killers that would become regulars in many clubs in the country. Several of his tracks would be featured in a number of Australian movies, Rave Documentaries and Cd compilations including bass Australia “live at big bassâ€, mixology 9 and two of his latest tracks on the newly released mixology 10 compilation.
With an idea to push the boundaries even further, Steve teamed up with his good mate Scott (aka dj Elysium) to create a live outfit that would change the way party people dealt with their shit!
This project with suitably titled !WARNING!.
Spending hours upon hours in Sono Sound Design studios, creating an extensive back catalogue of bootleg rmxs (including East 17, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Madonna etc) and originals, they put together a fully live show that tore Melbourne a new asshole in their debut show NYE 05!
!WARNING! would soon become one of the most talked about and dynamic acts in Melbourne, ultimately changing the face of live electronica in the country.
Steve then offered a position with the Australian School of Music Technology (A.S.M.T) as head lecturer of the dj mixing division and music production sector. His position with A.S.M.T quickly developed into a passion for teaching. He now holds his teaching career in equal hand with his music career. He can’t find anything better than helping out a budding dj or producer achieve their goals within the Australian music industry.
2008 looks very big for Steve Black with several of new sponsors on board, the inception of his new progressive/minimal live act called “Lime†(with dj Kalus) and several Australian and international vinyl releases companied with his debut mix cd compilation.
So keep your eyes & ears peeled for Steve Black’s upcoming underground adventures!
