About Me

The SF Bay Area’s folkloric band Alúna takes its name from the term in Colombia ’s Kogi Indian language meaning pure thought, spirit, soul.
Playing traditional folk instruments handmade in Colombia , the band preserves the sound of music that comes out of the combining of Indigenous, African, and Spanish cultures in that country.
While Cumbia is the focus, Alúna incorporates a mix of traditional and original compositions that ride on a variety of rhythms, including Puya, Bullerengue, Tambora, Currulao and Mapalé. The players are not just musicians but are also dedicated to study and preservation of the music and the culture it springs from.
