Jo Flo – It Ain’t No Talent Show

By Bryon Shannon
Last week he hung out with Lil’ Wayne and Twista. He’s got his own ringtones, an album coming out, a music video directed by the man behind Lupe Fiasco’s “Kick Push,” and his Blackberry address book reads like the white pages of the rap industry. With all this, what could Madison’s greatest MC be missing? An interview with The Booze News, of course! We’ve already got that covered.

TBN: So, let’s start with the basics. Where did you grow up?
Jo: I was born in Rockford Illinois, but we moved around a lot when I was growing up. I lived in Madison, Rockford, Beloit, Green Bay, Appleton, Peoria … I was always around this area though, so I got the best of the Midwest.
TBN: Who were your biggest influences?
Jo: Method Man was huge for me. Notorious B.I.G., Tupac
TBN: Were you always passionate about music?
Jo: Yea, I wrote my first rap when I was in third grade, like 11 years old. I remember it off the top, but I ain’t goin’ to spit it.
TBN: Alright, so if you weren’t doing rap, what would you be up to?
Jo: I’d be in the NBA.
TBN: Oh yea? Got a mean ball game?
Jo: Ask around. People who know me know that I’m nice like that. I’m an athlete at heart - that’s how I grew up. You’d be surprised, but I make it rain, dog.
TBN: I’ll take your word for it. So you’ve got a connection with Slip and Slide Records, right?
Jo: Yea they approached me on MySpace, and now I got a development deal with them. It helps me on a national level when I’m networking, but I like to keep things local too.
TBN: Nice,. So what’s the best thing about what you do?
Jo: It’s providing people with jobs. When you’re doing events, like at the Alliant Energy Center, you pay hundreds of people from different walks of life. I’m feeding families I don’t even know. It’s kind of cool.
TBN: So how was the atmosphere at your birthday gig with Lil’ Wayne?
Jo: Lil’ Wayne’s the shit - that’s my dude. He played the electric guitar on stage, rapping at the same time, doin’ his thing. We kicked it and talked a lot, and I heard some of his new tracks. We have similar styles - intelligent, articulate MC’s, so we come together on that.
TBN: So, Madison’s a big party school, you know that. Are you a big partier?
Jo: I wanna make the parties more high class, more of an A-list sort of thing. Something the whole country can look at.
TBN: What’s your drink of choice?
Jo: Patron Platinum, $200 a bottle. It ain’t Silver, its Platinum.
TBN: I should’ve guessed. Do they even sell that around here?
Jo: One place, Riley’s, in a locked cabinet. I buy it every Friday.
TBN: So you have a music video coming up, right?
Jo: Yes, it’s for “Get You Some,” a huge song! My man, Christopher Adams, is doing it in Chicago, Miami and Madison. He produced “Kick Push,” so this will definitely be ready for MTV. It’s gonna be hot - lots of energy, celebrity appearances, a straight Hollywood thing.
TBN: What’s going on with your album?
Jo: It’s going to be released only at West Towne Mall, only during March. Some stuff on it is commercial, and other stuff will help you through a time in your life you’re going through. I’m a genius though, so every track is its own masterpiece.
TBN: You’re modest, too, I see. How will you know you’ve finally made it?
Jo: I’ve been knowing that for years. It’s when you have valuable connections in the industry. This is business, it ain’t no talent show.
TBN: If anyone in hip-hop could be president, who do you think it would be?
Jo: Jo Flowroshus for President 2032.

Well, he had my vote. The interview closed up, and I left knowing that Wisconsin’s biggest MC is making history. The best thing you can do is “Get You Some.”
